i just finished reading jingo and it had one of the worst gut punches for me in the entire series so far, if not the worst, and i'm surprised i'm not seeing people talk about it. maybe it's just that i tend to obsess over what-ifs a bit too much and there's a unique horror in a barely avoided catastrophe that really gets me, but i was horrified by the scene in klatch where the dis-organisor, synced up with the wrong timeline, started reading out the deaths of all the watchmen. it was so chilling. maybe i should have felt relief because it was not actually happening, but i didn't. all i could feel was this horrible dread over how easily it could have happened. how easily everything could have gone horribly wrong and how bad the consequences would have been. there are narrowly avoided catastrophies in fiction all the time, but it's one thing to know that something was a close call and completely different to hear in real time exactly who would be dying right now if vimes had made just one different choice.
Putting up a statue to someone who tried to stop a war is not very, um, statuesque. Of course, if you had butchered five hundred of your own men out of arrogant carelessness, we'd be melting the bronze already.
