hey what do you think about removing age restrictions on voting? I saw some brief discussion recently and it got me curious. I definitely support drastically lowering the voting age but I struggle to not think of caveats that would require some minimum age. is there a common child liberation position on this I can take a look at or is it something you've considered in-depth before? I'd love to hear more about it
i suppose my investment in youth liberation is more based in protections + safeguards against guardian abuse/coercion than anything else at this point - that is, the removal of legal structures that grant guardians 'ownership' of children; guaranteeing youth some kind of right of free association, freedom from forced religious/cultural practice/attendance; the right to medical/personal/sexual/digital privacy, and so on.
for me, voting is kind of a "beside the point" issue, because the kind of freedom it offers even those of us old enough to do so are minimal and pretty farcical, at least here in the 'u.s.'. i wouldn't oppose a lowering from 18 to 16 or something like that, but 1) the electoral system is fucked beyond repair and a lowered voting age won't change that (and many are still denied voting rights based on incarceration, geography, etc), and 2) there are simply more important and life-or-death issues happening for young people that require more attention.
"All the answers are in theory" sounds remarkably like a pitch for a cult.
But that's probably because I've been mislead by anarchists and liberals to think that a lot of Marxists tend to treat it like a religion. Maybe if I should check myself into a reeducation camp.
