𝙿𝙰𝙻𝙴  𝙲𝙷𝙴𝙴𝙺𝚂  𝙱𝙻𝙾𝚂𝚂𝙾𝙼  𝚆𝙸𝚃𝙷  𝙵𝙸𝚁𝙴,  their  vibrance  giving  way  to  the  truth hiding in plain sight.  she's  been  aching  for  some  time  now,  donning  a  mask  of  professionalism  that's  too  tight  around  the  edges,  cutting  into  skin  the  longer  it  clings  to  her  face.  she's  doing  it  again,  working  to  the  bone,  staring  down  the  lens  of  a  microscope  at  a  virus  that's  unfortunately  landed  on  her  doorstep.  another  maniac  with  an  ego  the  size  of  the  world,  hoping  to  eradicate  anything  less  of  his  skewed  vision  of  perfection.  it  never  ends.  so  long  as  man  exists,  evil  will  𝙿𝚁𝙾𝚂𝙿𝙴𝚁.

she  lets  out  a  deep  sigh,  pinching  the  bridge  of  her  nose  in  vexation.  there's  an  apology  𝚂𝚃𝙸𝚁𝚁𝙸𝙽𝙶  around  in  her  head  like  a  storm,  resting  on  the  tip  of  her  tongue,  along  with  the  guilt  of  being  absent  for  so  long,  not  even  having  the  time  to  come  home  at  night,  rest  her  head  on  the  pillow,  and  say  goodnight.  no,  this  nightmare  has  ensured  they  won’t  know  rest  until  they’re  six  feet  in  the  ground.

❝  you  came  all  this  way  to  deliver  that  line?  ❞  her  voice  pushes  through  weary  breaths,  lips  curling  upward  into  a  𝚃𝙴𝙽𝙳𝙴𝚁  smile.  even  in  the  midst  of  darkness,  jill  finds  a  way  to  light  up  the  entire  room.  ❝  i've  missed  you.  i  should  have  answered  your  calls  it's  just...  ❞  she  trails  off,  averting  her  gaze  toward  a  group  of  monitors  blinking  'error'  in  unison.  great.  the  last  thing  she  needs  right  now  is  an  error...

❝  have  you  seen  the  news?  i'm  in  the  headlines  now.  how  does  it  make  sense  that  a  megalomaniac  can create  a  virus  that's  killed  thousands,  but  i'm  the  one  who’s  responsible  for  their  deaths?  if  i  don't  find  a  cure  in  time...  ❞  jaws  clench,  and  she  swallows  the  anguish  swelling  from  within.  she  can  cry  later,  when  it's  all  said  and  done.  when  the. vaccines  are  distributed  at  𝙻𝙸𝙶𝙷𝚃𝙽𝙸𝙽𝙶  speed,  and  countless  lives  are  saved.  ❝   thousands  will  turn  to  millions,  and  these  small  clusters  will  spread  into  one  giant  outbreak  stretching  out  from  the  atlantic  to  pacific.  i  can't  let  that  happen...  i  can't  fail,  because  if  i  fail?  we  all  die,  and  none  of  this  will  have  ever  mattered.  ❞

𝚃𝙷𝙴  𝙽𝙴𝙲𝙴𝚂𝚂𝙸𝚃𝚈  𝙾𝙵  𝚂𝙻𝙴𝙴𝙿  𝙸𝚂  𝙰𝙽  𝙰𝙻𝙱𝙰𝚃𝚁𝙾𝚂𝚂  around  her  neck,  coiling  tightly  into  an  indisposed  state  of  ephialtes.  she  slips  past  each  door  that  leads  to  another  distressing  memory,  fairly  aware  she's  dreaming  though  still  vigilant,  even  in  sleep.  ❝  no...  not  again.  ❞  edward's  mangled  corpse  shuffles  toward  her,  and  she  narrowly  escapes  through  the  next  door,  wincing  at  the  scratches  he  left  on  her  shoulder.  these  are  the  rooms  of  unrecovered  TRAUMA,  each  door  a  twisted  retelling  of  what's  transpired  through  her  forty  one  years  of  life.  in  the  darkness  she  stumbles  on  a  grave,  fingers  delicately  brushing  across  the  engraving  when  a  spotlight  clicks  on  overhead,  illuminating  the  name.

                                                       𝟷𝟿𝟽𝟺-𝟸𝟶𝟶𝟼'

she  chokes  on  a  sob,  her  heart  in  𝚃𝙴𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚁𝚂,  bound  to  the  infinite  chains  of  anguish,  and  she  quietly  begs  for  mercy  as  she  bursts  through  the  double  doors,  falling  into  a  bed  of  white  tulips.  it  barely  covers  the  ripe  scent  of  death  lingering  in  the  air,  and  she  stiffens  in  response,  knowing  exactly  where  she  is  the  moment  his  voice  bellows  out  from  behind.

“ i  succeeded  in  reanimating  them,  but  i  haven't  figured  out  how  to  keep  the  bodies  from  rotting  away...yet."

❝  have  to...  wake  up.  ❞  her  voice  is  scratchy,  coated  in  𝚂𝙰𝙽𝙳,  but  she  persists,  clasping  the  sheets  in  a  cold  sweat.

“ practice  makes  perfect.  meet  my  guests.  my  family  and  some  of  my  dearest  friends."

a  familiar  warmth  presses  against  her  cheek,  but  his  𝙳𝙾𝙼𝙸𝙽𝙴𝙴𝚁𝙸𝙽𝙶  gaze  remains  fixed  on  her,  looming  forward  with  a  most  revolting  grin.

" professor  rebecca  chambers.  welcome.  i'm  glenn  arias."

the  stench  of  corpses  are  replaced  by  a  more  welcomed  aroma.  caramel,  hints  of  dark  chocolate,  and  the  loud  smell  of  coffee  invades  her  nostrils,  gradually  𝚁𝙴𝙴𝙻𝙸𝙽𝙶  her  from  the  nightmare  she's  reliving  every  time  she  nods  off.  ❝  go  away! ❞  she  jolts  up  in  bed,  staring  at  the  alabaster  walls  for  a  few  seconds  before  sighing  out  in  relief.  it  was  only  a  dream...  this  time.

❝  jill?  ❞  there's  steam  coming  through  the  doorway  to  their  bathroom,  and  a  smile  instantly  tugs  at  the  corners  of  her  lips.  she's  alive,  with  a  cup  of  the  most  𝙳𝙴𝙲𝙰𝙳𝙴𝙽𝚃  coffee,  the  size  of  which  is  only  shy  of  an  actual  bucket.  ' she  must  have  gotten  a  trenta  cup. '

bare  feet  press  onto  the  cold  hard  wood  floors,  and  she's  soon  following  the  steam,  slipping  off  her  nightgown  in  the  process.  multitasking  has  become  second  nature  now.  ❝  good  morning.  ❞  she  steps  into  the  shower,  both  arms  wrapped  around  her  girlfriend  from  behind,  head  gently  leaning  against  her  back.  the  water  rains  down  on  their  bodies,  washing  away  the  fictitious  𝚃𝙴𝚁𝚁𝙾𝚁𝚂  from  the  night  prior,  but  not  the  scars  they've  lived  through.  ❝  how  long  was  i  asleep?  ❞   lithe  fingers  brush  across  pale  skin,  halting  just  before  she  reaches  the  mark  on  jill's  chest.  ❝  and  how  was  your  jog?  i  missed  you.  ❞

𝑩𝑹𝑬𝑨𝑲𝑰𝑵𝑮  𝑵𝑬𝑾𝑺  -  𝑹𝑨𝑪𝑪𝑶𝑶𝑵  𝑪𝑰𝑻𝒀  𝑰𝑺  𝑵𝑶  𝑴𝑶𝑹𝑬.  𝑾𝑰𝑷𝑬𝑫  𝑶𝑭𝑭  𝑻𝑯𝑬  𝑴𝑨𝑷  𝑳𝑨𝑺𝑻  𝑾𝑬𝑬𝑲  𝑰𝑵  𝑨  𝑺𝑼𝑫𝑫𝑬𝑵  𝑩𝑳𝑨𝑺𝑻,  𝑻𝑯𝑬  𝑪𝑰𝑻𝒀  𝑰𝑺  𝑵𝑶𝑾  𝑰𝑵-

she  turns  off  the  television  with  a  weary  sigh,  wrapping  jill's  arm  in  gauze,  her  gaze  full  of  𝚆𝙾𝚁𝚁𝚈.  the  hotel  room  has  seen  better  days,  spattered  in  stains  from  carpet  to  ceiling,  the  stench  of  cigarette  smoke  hanging  in  the  air  like  an  unwelcome  guest...  clinging  to  their  hair  and  clothes.  it  could  be  worse.

                                                 '  it  could  always  be  worse.  '

❝   all  done.  you  should  be  fine  in  a  few  days,  that'll  be  just  enough  time  for  us  all  to  reconvene.   ❞   spoken  softly  as  if  it  were  an  afterthought,  she  lies  back  onto  the  broken  mattress  springs,  staring  at  the  stains  and  cracked  stucco,  desperately  trying  to  escape  the  nightmare  they've  been  thrown  into  against  their  will;  knowing  deep  down  it's  only  just  𝙱𝙴𝙶𝚄𝙽.

❝  when  i  heard  the  news  i  assumed  the  worst.  i  thought  you  were  -  ❞  the  words  teeter  on  the  edge  of  rebecca's  tongue,  but  they  don't  fall  out.  instead,  she  decides  to  lean  forward,  breathing  out  the  thought  with  a  𝚁𝙴𝙻𝙸𝙴𝚅𝙴𝙳  exhale.  ❝   i'm  glad  you're  okay...  despite  the  circumstances. ❞  despite  the  fact  they  may  not  survive  the  fall  of  umbrella,  it's  well  worth  the  risk.  it’s  worth  every  precious  sacrifice.

𝑩𝑹𝑬𝑨𝑲𝑰𝑵𝑮  𝑵𝑬𝑾𝑺  -  𝑹𝑨𝑪𝑪𝑶𝑶𝑵  𝑪𝑰𝑻𝒀  𝑰𝑵  𝑹𝑼𝑰𝑵𝑺.  𝑾𝑰𝑷𝑬𝑫  𝑶𝑭𝑭  𝑻𝑯𝑬  𝑴𝑨𝑷  𝑳𝑨𝑺𝑻  𝑾𝑬𝑬𝑲  𝑰𝑵  𝑨  𝑺𝑼𝑫𝑫𝑬𝑵  𝑩𝑳𝑨𝑺𝑻,  𝑻𝑯𝑬  𝑪𝑰𝑻𝒀  𝑰𝑺  𝑵𝑶𝑾-

𝙳𝙴𝙲𝙴𝙼𝙱𝙴𝚁  𝟸𝟺𝚃𝙷,  𝟸𝟶𝟶𝟻.

𝚃𝙷𝙴  𝙲𝚁𝙸𝚂𝙿  𝙼𝙾𝚁𝙽𝙸𝙽𝙶  𝙰𝙸𝚁  𝙵𝙴𝙴𝙻𝚂  𝙻𝙸𝙺𝙴  tiny  shards  of  broken glass  in  her  lungs,  burning  deeply  from  inside  her  chest,  billowing  out  into  light  huffs  of  fog  in  the  atmosphere.  despite  the  below  freezing  weather,  beads  of  sweat  form  a  polka  dot  pattern  on  the  nape  of  rebecca’s  neck,  eventually  rolling  down  ( and  dissipating )  onto  the  snow  covered  pavement  below.  the  neighborhood  is  decorated  from  rooftop  to  hedges  in  thousands  of  stringed  lights  and  yard  santa’s.  life  has  resumed  back  to  normal  for  this  small  sleepy  town  in  canada,  but  for  them,  every  shadow  and  unfamiliar  face,  and  any  odd  object  in  the  dead  of  night  is  a  presumed  threat.  a  monster  with  slimy  flesh  and  lengthy  claws,  or  a  blond  leanly  built  man  in  an  unassuming  pair  of  shades.  triggers  come  in  every  shape  and  form,  and  before  she  knows  it,  she’s  tripped  and  skimmed  her  knees  on  the  sidewalk’s  unforgiving  pavement,  cursing  under  her  breath.  it’s  time  to  𝚁𝚄𝚂𝙷  home,  to  a  familiar  face,  to  the  only  person  that  feels  like  a  time  before  she  feared  sleep.  a  time  when  she  could  simply  go  outside  without  an  overwhelming  sense  of  terror  lurking  around  every  corner.  when  life  felt  more  like  living  rather  than  just  surviving.

❝  jill? ❞  she  calls  out  the  instant  she  𝙱𝚄𝚁𝚂𝚃𝚂  through  the  door,  crashing  into  jill’s  warmth  with  a  loud  sigh  of  relief.  ❝ i’m  so  glad  you’re  here,  i  was  so  worried  that-  ❞  emerald  eyes  travel  to  the  mistletoe  stapled  above  their  heads,  narrowing  playfully  in  response.  ❝ of  course  you’d  be  doing  that. ❞  scraped  arms  unfold  with  a  gentle  smile,  resting  comfortably  on  either  side  of  her  girlfriend’s  shoulders.  they’ll  talk  about  her  newfound  fear  of  snowmen  donning  sunglasses  later.

lips  part,  easing  into  a  tender  kiss  that  might  as  well  pierce  the  skies  with  their  shared  electricity.  she  shivers,  savoring  the  sensation  of  their  tongues  entwined  like  velvet  ribbons  tied  in  a  most  elegant  knot.  her  heart  skips  a  beat,  pressed  firmly  against  jill’s  chest.  this  is  home.  𝚂𝙷𝙴  is  home.

❝  i  love  you. ❞  it  slips  out,  breathless  but  𝙲𝙴𝚁𝚃𝙰𝙸𝙽,  she  repeats  the  three  words  with  a  smile,  and  once  again  with  buoyant  laughter.  if  there  is  one  thing  left  that  is  certain  in  this  world,  it’s  the  blissful  feeling  of  confessing  what’s  been  blooming  from  within  for  years  now.  finally,  she  can  breathe.
