June 23rd, Year XXXX

The Queen sat in front of her ornate dressing table, brushing away at her long black hair that flowed over her shoulder. Each brush was mechanical and forced and was unlike the usual swift, graceful brushing she did every morning. She heard quiet footsteps behind her and saw the reflection of her husband in her mirror.

He paced back and forth, waves upon waves of anxious energy floating off of him. The Queen quietly stood, the creaking of the stool the only noise in their shared room. She gently placed the brush down on the table before walking over to her husband.

She reached out and took his hand, stopping him in his tracks. He looked down at her, a storm of negative emotions in his eyes. She watched as he gulped and ever so slowly pulled her in for a hug. Immediately, her arms wrapped around him and she hid her face in his chest.

It could have been minutes or hours, the two didn’t know and didn’t care but they finally pulled away from each other. King Wan dug into his pockets and pulled out two red strings. The both stared at the horrible colour that stood out against the King’s pale skin.

Queen Ji Su slowly reached out, picking up when string and with a shaking hand started to wrap it around Wan’s wrist. When she finished, wan did the same for her.
