This time out we're kickin' M.I.A.'s Bird Flu, featuring one of the most sonically wide-ranging, frenetic, ass-kickin'est beats yet created by humankind.  Featuring a shitfuckload of samples (including, for the highly distinctive opening and a lot of the percussion, a straightup lift of the drums of Thiruvizhannu Vantha from the Tamil-language film Jeyam, a song that's awesome too) and urumee drumming recorded expressly for the track, this track blows my mind.  In addition to having crafted a great beat (not alone, but what beatsmith works completely alone?), M.I.A.'s delivery is characteristically excellent.  Her understanding of the political issues she writes about has been compellingly called into question, and since then my enthusiasm for her lyrics has been diminished somewhat (perhaps once I more fully research the critique I'll be able to speak on this with more certainty), but even the bare fact of including shit that's actually relevant to human life is better than standard at this moment in musical history, and sonically she unquestionably fuckin' rules.
