With the rerun of the Wish Lantern event coming to a close I gotta say I find it interesting how Mother Gothel is very clearly the villain of the story. Like the characters even comment on how bad her actions of locking the princess away was.
I donโt think any other Disney villain gets this kind of treatment. Like the main 7 are viewed in a positive light to the point where they have dorms inspired by them. Even Ursulaโs eels are given a positive twist as they have a whole event inspired by them flipping Arielโs boat over.
Even villains such as Judge Frollo and the cat and fox from Pinocchio are given a positive spin. So what makes Gothel different in the sense that she gets to be the traditional villain in her story and not twisted into a more positive light?
That's right; Mother Gothel is, so far, the only Disney villain who is treated and perceived as a villain in the world of Twisted Wonderland. We don't really have a proper reason given for this, unfortunately.
Interesting, the boys consistently refer to Gothel as a "witch", which is significant because, according to Lilia in 6-18, "witch" or ้ญๅฅณ/majo is a derogatory term used to refer to mages back in the day. So maybe the story they're reading is so old that it comes from a time when mages were feared and thus were labelled "witches", regardless of their moral standing?
Even though the NRC boys seem to empathize with Gothel (such as Deuce refusing to believe she's evil and Riddle thinking that Rapunzel must've not wanted to make her mother figure sad), the narrative seems to make it clear Gothel IS a "bad guy" who abducted an infant and locks her in a tower. This, of course, serves the story's purpose of paralleling Gothel with Riddle's mother and Rapunzel with Riddle.
I think the story of the Princess in the Tower and the witch that kept her there is notably different because itโs explicitly pointed out to be a โfictionalโ story involving โa kingdom that doesnโt existโ. Gothel does not appear to be based on or inspired by a real historical figure in the twisted world.
Every other instance seems to imply the Disney villains (and especially the Great Seven) are actual historical figures who contributed to society in some way. These figures may then go on to have pieces of media inspired by them, which is not the case for Gothel. For example, there are films inspired by the Fairest Queen and picture books inspired by the QoH's card soldiers. Ironically, it seems that the stories considered fictional are the ones where the Disney villains are perceived to beโฆ well, villainous.
this took forever but im finally done with this lineup oughh the Meryl Jack is a small cargo ship crew who traverses back and forth from neopia to krawk island. EDIT: forgot to include extra text

As part of my big neopets review I decided to take a crack at redrawing the royalgirl jetsam. on the left is the original and on the right is me taking a crack at it. i had a ton of fun and might end up doing more of these at some point if the mood strikes me
Silver is the perfect colour for people who want their pets to be grey, but not depressed. Here's my boy
The name is a character from Potionomics
For some reason, this didn't show up in my notifications. Maybe the Invisible saboteurs were working sooner than we thought.
This is a good argument for adopting Silver pets. Less sadness, more shine!
