hear me out: au where something terrible happens to jethro (a curse, a mortal wound, whatever) and it seems unavoidable that he’s going to die. shira’s spare the dying isn’t working, they’re too far from civilization to call for help, and even if they could jethro has a Reputation and it’s unlikely anybody would actually offer any assistance.
however, aurion has a trick up his sleeve. a necromantic, not-so-legal within the realm trick that he picked up somewhere along his travels. a spell to raise the dead. that night, he offers to stay awake with jethro, to “monitor his condition”.
it’s midnight when jethro dies, and it’s about three minutes after 12 when he’s up again.
it leaves the party disoriented, of course. how’d he survive? did the effects of the spells just take longer than usual? but the detect magic checks come up with nothing. either it was a miracle, or someone extremely powerful simply… willed the man back to life, making sure to leave no trace. and what was the likelihood of that?
so not-jethro continues to travel with them, held up by invisible strings, nobody the wiser. it’s killing aurion inside. he wants to confess what he’s done so badly, and the energy it’s draining from him is leaving him weak, but he can’t. not when everyone finally seems so happy. and some days, even he can believe it.
(bonus points if the party found out what happened and all chose to ignore it rather than confront that jethro is Gone and whatever they’re talking to is just some advanced magical programming on aurion’s part)
