āPerfect Hermany: A Musical Tribute to Jerry Hermanā
42nd Street Moon, in collaboration with Musical Theatre West, has brought Jason Graaeās vocals and charm to the stage in tribute of the legendary composer-lyricist, Jerry Herman. Accompanied by talented pianist John Boswell, the evening of Herman music is in sturdy hands with Graae and Boswell. Whether youāre a basic connoisseur of Hermanās catalog or a dedicated fan, everyone will find joy and entertainment in this well-produced tribute.
Graae not only brings his dependable tenor and charm, but also some oboe playing and an almost-tap solo. Songs from such treasures as Hello, Dolly, Mame, Mack and Mabel, and La Cage Aux Folles, but also from Hermanās lesser-known works such as Dear World and The Grand Tour comprise the evening. It is with The Grand Tour where Graaeās voice and acting are in legit form, especially in his turn at the romantically stirring ballad, Marianne. Graaeās passion and appreciation for The Grand Tour serves as a highlight medley among a wonderful revue of Hermanās best. In addition to the tunes, Graaeās anecdotes of touring with Herman are engaging, told with comedic genuineness, and serve up a healthy dose of self-deprecating commentary. Intertwined with the anecdotes and songs are video clips of Graaeās performances with and for Herman from days gone by.Ā
Perfect Hermany...is a welcome escape back to the Golden Age, a time where songs could be complex in tune and touching in emotion. Herman was a master of this balance, one of many reasons why his songs and shows have stood the test of time. Graae, Boswell, and the teams at 42nd Street Moon and Musical Theatre West have done audiences a service in presenting this production, and I encourage musical theatre fans of all interests to get your ticket now. Go see this show!

This is another of my grandfatherās records, which I think Iāve played only once before it popped up on the randometer, which is precisely why Iām making myself listen to everything in my record collection. Thatās not because I donāt like musical theatre, indubitably I do, but because this version, by the Knightsbridge Theatre Chorus and Orchestra is perhaps not serving it the glory it deserves. Perhaps most well-known now as another star vehicle for the magnificent Barbra Streisand in the 1969 film version, Hello Dolly had previously smashed Broadway box office records when it ran from 1964. This includes a record ten Tony Awards that was only broken by The Producers in 2001. Music-wise, it very much has a vaudeville vibe, which dates it somewhat. But the title song in particular is such a barnstorming, leg-kicking, melody that you canāt help but fall in love with it every time you hear it. In fact, I first heard Louis Armstrong sing it (on another of my grandfatherās records) which he released the year the musical first hit Broadway and his version has become so synonymous with the song that he even appeared in the film of the musical. His version was a number one hit in both the US and UK, even knocking The Beatles off their record-breaking perch in 1964. #hellodolly #jerryherman #musicaltheatre #barbrastreisand #louisarmstrong #tonyawards #knightsbridgetheatre #vinyl #recordcollection #nowplaying #nowlistening #randomrecordreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CIrGLLLJZBs/?igshid=snb7zx4tkztg
Despite the chaos that yesterday was, I am so thrilled that I still had the incredible opportunity to make my @54below debut last night with @thejohnpeterson! As part of āThe Best of Times: The Musical Wisdom of Jerry Hermanā, a wonderful Jerry Herman tribute put together by @scottcoulternyc, we got to revisit the lovely duet of āWith Anne on My Armā that we sang with the Utah Symphony in 2017. It was such a great night of remembering Jerry Herman, celebrating his amazing songbook, and bringing joy during the craziness that life can have. . . . . . . . . . . #54below #debut #nyc #jerryherman #nyctheatre #tribute #musicaltheatre (at Feinsteinās/54 Below) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9riIuaplU6/?igshid=1p6hj2xcmeiyg
