I don’t usually write reviews about shows, in fact lately (as you can see from my lack of tumblr posts!) I haven’t found enough passion/interest/motivation to write about much of anything. However, last night changed that, and reminded me once again that the way you see the world depends entirely on the people you see it with. As some of you will already know, and in fact some of you joined me, there was a Lights show last night, and it was this show that has motivated me to find enough passion in something to begin writing again. A quick recap of what Lights means to me….I’ve been a fan of her music for many reasons since June 09 when I stumbled upon her myspace. Through my enjoyment of her music I have met some of the best people in my life, including the girl who I WILL one day marry. I have learned to ground myself, and grow with my emotions even when I don’t understand them, and know that one day, even the bad days become good. I have also been fortunate enough to meet the lady herself on several, extremely humbling, occasions. She is just the kind of person you know is not afraid to be a real human person, she’s not afraid to be sad or angry, and she has this incredibly generous love that she shares with everyone she meets. It is both admirable and inspirational. That’s beside the point; I do apologize for the mushy gushy start to the review! The point is I first saw Lights live just over 3 years ago, and last night I was absolutely blown away by just how much her show has changed; her voice, her presence, her enjoyment. The first show I went to of hers was one of my favorite shows of all time, and at the time I believe it showcased one of the best live voices I’d ever heard. 3 years later I am absolutely astounded by her voice. Each show I have been to since that first one her voice has grown stronger and stronger, reaching higher and higher, and during last night’s rendition of Heart of Glass (which happens to be one of my favorite songs…aside from Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell…which coincidentally I have also heard Lights perform a version of during a sound check) I was dumbfounded. This girl has grown into this incredible woman (which sounds only mildly condescending given she is 2 years older than me, and far more talented) with an unmatched voice. She completely entices the audience into their own little concert bubble where you truly can forget there’s anyone else there in the world. She takes the time to showcase all of her talents, from the big “production” numbers like Flux and Flow, Suspension and Everybody Breaks a Glass, to piano solos of songs like Saviour and guitar acoustics of In the Dark I See. And it’s great to see her commanding the stage, dancing around, connecting with fans and seemingly genuinely having a good time. Now for the truly special part about the show, every show I go to feels like a family reunion. I have such a close group of friends that I would not have met without Lights, and whenever there’s a show I’m just as excited about seeing my friends as I am about the show, because they are both equally amazing for me. It’s so refreshing just to catch up with a group of people that you know you’ve grown up with. We might not see each other all the time, but whenever we do, it’s great and it feels like no time has passed at all. When I got to the show yesterday I had been awake for over 12 hours already, and had just come from the office where I started my new job on Monday. It’s fair to say I was exhausted, and yet the minute I saw my friends and started to hear music it felt like I’d just woken up. It’s no secret that I’ve been going through a string of events that have been testing every aspect of my life, and slowly breaking me down. But yesterday for the first time, I started to look up again, I was re-energised. And it’s not just any old show, with any old crowd that can do that. On top of all of this, the magic of a Lights show continues in the form of making me feel closer to my fiancée who is still far too far away. Lights music has played such an important role in our relationship, it’s the reason we were introduced to each other, it’s the music we cried to on my last night in LA when we got to see each other for the first time since we officially became a couple, it’s the music we experienced when we waited for the LA show together, and drove 10 hours to Guelph to see a show together, it’s the music we listened to when I showed up in the US to surprise her on the day of the Lights show in her home town, it’s the music I proposed to, and the music I one day hope to dance to at my wedding. Because of all this whenever I hear, or see Lights, I instantly feel closer to Jackie, like maybe she’s not that far away after all. So I would just like to reiterate a big thank you to Lights, for not only her music, but also for her absolutely charming self, and for giving me the opportunity to meet these incredible people, and to re ground myself whenever I lose my way.
