A Moment With Jerad Walker
Welcome to “A Moment With…”.
Each week, we profile one representative of our 130-person staff or 600 volunteers to give you a chance to learn more about them.
This week, we highlight Jerad Walker. Jerad has been the Production Coordinator at WAMU's Bluegrass Country for four years.
Q: What does the term Production Coordinator mean?
Jerad: I am the station's audio engineer and main audio editor. I produce promos, write copy, host two shows, maintain our website and social media pages, oversee our video production, and I manage our intern and volunteer staff. I also contribute to Metro Connection on WAMU 88.5 by producing a monthly segment called "DC Dives" where I profile dive bars in the Washington, DC metro area.
I love my job.
Q: What is your favorite distraction from being productive?
Jerad: Wikipedia. I am a total nerd and can start with the Mughal Empire and end up at Manute Bol an hour later.
Q: What was the first music you ever purchased? And in what format?
Jerad: The first music I ever purchased was a CD-- Core by Stone Temple Pilots. Followed very shortly by a much better album called 10 from the band Pearl Jam.
I grew up listening to a lot of west coast hard rock-- Soundgarden, Nirvana, etc. But I was rocking out to oldies music long before I had purchase power. My mom was a big R&B and rock fan, so I heard my fair share of the Rolling Stones and James Brown.
Q: Tell us about one of your favorite moments while working at WAMU?
Jerad: My favorite WAMU moment was the time I met Smokey Robinson. He was wearing a baby blue velour tracksuit, and he gave me a hug. I could have died then and there and been at total peace.
Q: If you could choose, what would your ideal radio show be like?
Jerad: I really love the Dick Spottswood Show and American Routes. Combine those two and that would be my pilot.
Q: Can you recommend an activity, site of interest, venue, restaurant, or other DC spot that is important to you?
Jerad: Rockabilly night at the Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring, MD. I met my wife there.
Q: Adorable! OK, last and most important question: Do you think you can dance?
Jerad: Oh yeah. I'm the king of the Otis Redding wiggle in place move.
We’ll be back next week with another interview. Until then, share your comments with us on, Facebook, and Twitter!
