(In praise of our god. All of your stories catch me off guard, but that one was so absolutely jarring it still sticks out in my mind whenever I think of your writing.)
Thanks Jeff! I really like that one too.
That raises a good question: If gunshot wounds are equally lethal all across the body, why are military personnel instructed to aim for the chest or head? Or is that another myth?
I didnāt say that all gunshot wounds are equally lethal. My point was that all gunshot wounds have the potential to be life threatening. A bullet to the heart and a bullet to the pinky have very different odds ratios of killing the victim, but either can be deadly.
Military personnel are aimed to shoot for the chest because itās the largest area to aim for, easiest to hit, slowest to move, and has the highest likelihood (outside the head) of disabling or killing your opponent. Police are trained this way, military are trained this way, and they do so because it works.
Headshots are very difficult to pull off, because the head can move and is much smaller than the chest. However, they are almost universally either lethal or permanently disabling.

I've always been curious about your vision; the lack of eyelids would allow dust and dirt to get in your eyes, which could easily rob you of your sight. I typically think of you as having poor vision, but other senses and skills making up for it. Is that accurate, or is your vision somehow 20/20 still?
My vision has remained unhampered by my lack of eyelids. Yeah, Iām not entirely sure how that works either. Everyone Iāve met seems to have a different explanation for it too:
Reach, the leader ofĀ āThe Gatekeepers of the Apocalypseā (third person mentioned here) said I displayed small amounts of precognitive capabilities, so there was a good chance I was completelyĀ blind and using my precog abilities to see the world around me with a clarity my eyes couldnāt grant me. Would also explain why I have such good spatial awareness.
Rito, my former boss when I was working with The Family, believed I had poor vision and had gained some sort of super-hearing or super-sensitivity to compensate. I never believed it much. I feel like itās something I would notice, and it doesnāt really explain why I can aim down the sights of a sniper rifle, or read and write without issue.
Alexandria, our local supernatural expert, has been insisting she wants to examine my eyes for three years now, because she thinks theyāve been charmed with some sort of protection spell that prevents them from taking damage. If that happened, I wouldnāt know where it came from, but who knows? Iāve had so many spells and curses cast on me, it might just be a side effect.
As for me? I try not to think too much about it. They work as it is, I just try to enjoy it.
So you keep dying and getting brought back to life by some ungodly demonic force for some reason. How much would you pay those eldritch abominations who keep somehow bringing you back to life with black magic to just kill you already?
Not quite.Ā I mean, Iāve died and come back to life a few times, yeah, but itās not like itās the same guy doing it over and over again as some sort of sadistic torture (although maybe there isĀ some sort of higher power keeping me alive? If there is, fucking cut it off, I donāt need your charity), itās more the fact that whenever I die thereās someone who really needs me to do somethingĀ so they gotta bring me back to make sure I get the job done and they let me fuck off afterwards.
I donāt really mind. Life sucks, but Iāve seen the afterlife and eh, itās not a lot better. Less tiresome, but also less exciting. I figure Iāll die for realsies when time comes and Iāll just drink and fuck as much as I can in the meantime.
