Several pieces, recently, make claims about the efficiency and use - or otherwise - of various approaches to large-scale computing.

Amazon’s Jeff Barr, for example, makes some big claims for the efficiency and environmental friendliness of cloud-based computing.

On average, AWS customers use 77% fewer servers, 84% less power, and utilize a 28% cleaner power mix, for a total reduction in carbon emissions of 88% from using the AWS Cloud instead of operating their own data centers.

Elsewhere, Data Center Knowledge and Silicon Angle are amongst those reporting on a recent piece of research, the headline from which was that $30billion-worth of servers (almost 30%, apparently) sit idle in global data centers.
