The landmark #JeepSJ (sometimes better known as the Wagoneer) was introduced way back in 1962 by Kaiser-Jeep - and aside from products from International Harvester, it had few direct competitors in those early days - the #Wagoneer was the first proper modern SUV to put as much emphasis on comfort and style as utility and off-road prowess. Ten years later the company had been acquired by AMC and a host of newer SUVs were eating into Jeep (and International Harvester) sales - so AMC began rejuvenating the lineup. There had been two-door SJs in the 1960s and #AMC revived that body, but styled it slightly differently - creating the first #JeepCherokee in late 1973. The #Cherokee was aimed straight at the Ford Bronco and Chevy K5 Blazer - a two-door outdoor activity #SUV aimed at younger buyers where the Wagoneer was aimed at families. The butch looking Cherokee was exciting, but better still was the #CherokeeChief - with wide-track axles running even bigger tires, flares, and graphics packages. The narrow-track version became the “Cherokee S.” The Chief was as good off road as on, and it looked appreciably meaner than the competition - very much using muscle car themes in an off-road package. Base Cherokees in this era made due with AMC 258 Straight six seen in many Jeep and AMC products over the years, but most were powered by the AMC 360 V8 and a few had the big 401, discontinued in late 1978. For off road work these trucks had Quadra-trac 4WD and a few choices of low range gearing. The Cherokee was popular enough that AMC added a four-door variant in 1977, which somewhat diluted the mission but didn’t seem to effect the popularity of the now more upmarket Wagoneer. Only two-doors got the “wide track” treatment, even if the Cherokee Chief option was eventually added to the four-door. After 1979 a wide array of special models (Laredo, Golden Eagle, etc.) were offered on both the narrow and wide-track versions of the #SJCherokee but the wider, flared ones get the most attention today.
