Prime minister-designate Mark Carney's team has approached former Quebec premier Jean Charest to offer him a role, Radio-Canada is reporting.

The nature of the position is unknown. But according to sources with knowledge of the discussion, Charest has no intention of becoming a minister.

Jean Charest, the former Premier of Quebec, will be a candidate to succeed Erin O'Toole as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

He will make the official announcement on Thursday, two sources confirmed to Radio-Canada.

Earlier Monday, he won the endorsement of columnist Tasha Kheiriddin, who will not be running.

Kheiriddin was one of the anticipated candidates for the Conservative leadership race, but after careful consideration and discussions with Charest, she said he is best placed to advance their shared vision for the party.

The Superior Court of Quebec has awarded $385,000 to former Quebec premier Jean Charest in his lawsuit against the government for the unlawful disclosure of his personal information during an investigation by the province's anti-corruption unit. The former premier had filed a lawsuit against the government after details of the Mâchurer investigation were sent to Quebecor media in 2017. Charest was never charged once the investigation was completed, but the leaks mentioned that he was considered a person of interest.

The federal government has named former Quebec premier Jean Charest as a special envoy to help Canada secure a temporary seat on the United Nations Security Council.

A Global Affairs Canada spokeswoman said Friday that Charest had already visited the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Kuwait in his new role.

Angela Savard said the former premier met with “high-level representatives” in those countries, “in order to discuss and to make progress on Canada’s priorities.”

Charest knows the states of the Persian Gulf well, having been named last year as co-chair of the Canada-UAE Business Council, an industry group working to promote commercial ties between the two countries.
