New Bossa Nova video Tutorial on YouTube at Uke Like The Pros This ukulele tutorials will show you how to strum a Bossa Nova pattern. Although typically you would play a Bossa Nova pattern finger style, in today’s lesson we will strum the rhythm with our index fingers. Bossa Nova became famous in the 1970’s when Jazz saxophonist Stan Getz collaborated with Brazilian composers and guitar players Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto. 
Most Bossa Nova patterns are played with an alternating bass pattern on beats 1 and 3 using the root and 5th of the chord but would require a ukulele with a low G string. Since many of us don’t have a low G, but want to learn this lesson, the strumming will work whether you have a soprano, concert, tenor, or baritone ukulele. We are going to use a D Major 7 ukulele chord for the entire lesson. The fret fingering is 2 - 1 - 2 - 0. The rhythm pattern is a 2 bar pattern that repeats. The strum pattern looks like this: (D = down, U = up) D D D U U D U U D D 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + | 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + Another cool technique to add is to play the rhythm staccato (short), which gives it a authentic sound.
