Next on the #jazzfridays soundsystem today is flutist Paul Horn’s 1963 modal classic, Impressions of Cleopatra, with Emil Richards [vibes], Victor Feldman [piano] Chuck Israels [bass], Colin Bailey [drums] and Larry Bunker [percussion]. Whatever your thoughts on the Burton/Taylor film, here Horn creates his own impression of Alex North’s original movie score, crafting one of the best examples of modal jazz’s absorption of Eastern musical sensibilities into the American jazz framework. Never mind the odd title on Spotify, this one has killer modal grooves beginning to end.

First up on the CF soundsystem for today’s #jazzfridays is the outstanding Companionship LP by Sahib Shihab, featuring Kenny Clarke, Benny Bailey, Francy Boland, Milt Jackson and more, through the 20 pieces featured Companionship includes percussive rompers, modal jazz numbers and beautiful vocal ballads, including one sung by none less than Milt Jackson, and never a dull moment. A classic from beginning to end.

Couldn’t wrap up #jazzfridays without a slice of spiritual jazz. This one by Rahsaan Roland Kirk on Atlantic from 1973 is a beautiful record full with orchestral tones and backing vocals by Dee Dee Bridgewater and Jeanne Lee. The 10 minute long Seasons is our highlight on this one, but the whole album is worth diving into.

Black Saint albums are quickly becoming a staple of our #jazzfridays recommendations. This one by The 360 Degree Music Experience is a serious trip led by drummer Beaver Harris in the company of heavyweights such as Cecil McBee and Azar Lawrence, but also by a Steel Ensemble and a sitar player. The three part In: Sanity suite is madness, but also check the latin flavoured Sahara for more vibes.

Wrapping up this #jazzfridays selection with a stone cold performance by the Ornette Coleman Trio in Stockholm and Ornette’s first recording for Blue Note Records. Free, avant-garde stylings at their best and one to keep you warm during winter, cause let’s face it…. winter is coming!

#jazzfridays takes you further out with this outstanding live recording by Roy Brooks & The Artistic Truth from 1973, lovingly reissued by Jazzman Records in recent times. A heavyweight lineup including Sonny Fortune, Reggie Workman, Olu Dara (yeah that’s Nas’ old man), and Cecil Bridgewater to name a few. Roy takes us on a heavy rhythm trip right off the bat as M’jumbe goes back and forth between funk and be-bop. We’re also digging the slower paced Eboness, beautiful stuff!
