Jay is a closeted immigrant who has a history of not fitting in with her pares. When she sees Ford, she thinks "hey, he's kinda weird, just like me!" But they speak different languages when it comes to socializing and Ford is used to being on the defense from, you know, a lifetime of being bullied, so it doesn't go well. Ford is convinced Jay hates him and vice versa. If it wasn't for Fiddleford, they'd probably never end up talking it up. I headcanon him to be a social guy and pretty popular in college. I can see him and Jay being in friendly terms and Fidds kinda tutoring her. One day they'd end up in Ford and Fidds's dorm (I don't see Ford thinking highly about most of his classmates, nor as someone who talks his feelings out with Fidds, so he never mentioned his bad experiences with Jay specifically) and Ford, feeling vulnerable having one of his "bullies" in his space, is extremely rude to Jay, calling her stupid when she has trouble following Fidds explanatios. She leaves quickly after that. Fiddleford is appoled by Ford's behavior and convinces him to apologize. Jay and Ford talk things through and even become friends, growing closer and closer in time.
