enjoyed your answered asks from @thisplaceishardtoexplain and had a follow-up question.
Do you consider Simone Devon/Devonshire Productions and Jay Edwards work as falling under the Harmony banner or as their own studios? Something about Jay's work just hit me a little harder than most of his contemporaries (And there was always something about the red brick wall set that just made me squirm a little extra)
It's a bit complicated, but I'd consider them to be their own studios.
Prior to Harmony, you mostly had S&M magazines published by HOM (House of Milan) and LDL. (This is during the 90s, I'm not getting into the whole history of BDSM publishing.) You have to know that, at this time, any combination of sex and bondage was considered obscene. Like, you could go to jail for it. So the HOM/LDL stuff had no men in them (sometimes there would be a gloved hand) and anything sexual was only implied. In addition to the bondage there was plenty of whipping, that sort of thing. Plenty of misogyny and racism in the text, which ugh.
Harmony came along with the whole "Love Bondage" philosophy. Bondage could be pleasurable for her! (This was a personal revelation when I discovered their stuff!) Harmony represented the B&D part of the BDSM spectrum. (Also, they gave credit to the models, which I guess hadn't been done before.) I think they may have published some spanking videos but the focus was on bondage & peril. Men sometimes were on screen as riggers and/or actors.
They did distribute some of Jay Edwards and Bryan Evans / Simone Devon / Devonshire videos. But JE and Devonshire also distributed their own stuff. Which may have been a financial decision. But also, Harmony (to my knowledge) never published bondage material with vibrators, and Devonshire definitely did go there. I can't remember if Jay Edwards did vibrator stuff, but he definitely had his models sucking dildos, which you would never see in a Harmony title.
But the vibrator / forced orgasm stuff was OK with another company, Closeup Concepts, which did distribute Devonshire and Jay Edwards videos as well as their own stuff. I don't know if Darla Crane was involved with Closeup as a business but she did make a lot of videos for them.
So that's a very long answer to your question about bondage publishing in the 90s.
I agree that Jay's stuff hit harder, along with Jack Banner and Dominic Wolfe. And I remember that brick wall!
100 Miss Taken points to you for an excellent question!
