Javi was depressed, and Boone was worried.
Isolating himself from everyone around him, locking himself in his room whenever he was home, skipping meals, shuffling around at night instead of sleeping… it just wasn't healthy. Boone felt terrible, just sitting by and letting him do this.
That's how the plan came to be.
A surprise weekend getaway, Boone's treat. Javi couldn't turn down something like that, could he? It's not like he had other plans, anyway.
"I'm only comin' 'cause Kate said I should," Javi griped, glaring down at his phone. And because I wouldn't have anyone to cook for me, if you were out of the house… he frowned deeply. I'm such a leech.
"We're gonna have a great time!" Boone insisted, still smiling wide, fingers tapping rhythmically on the steering wheel. "Kate's gonna be jealous she wasn't invited," he joked.
Javi sighed, but he didn't reply. Why did he invite me anyway? It's not like we're super close, I'm just his roommate… but Javi had to admit, with his one and only real friend a twenty-hour car ride away in the Big Apple, Boone and his group probably was his next best thing… he cast a glance at the other man (who was humming happily along to the radio, too distracted to notice) and decided he'd better start shaping up. He was real kind to give me a place to stay when Scott kicked me out, even though we'd barely met— I should be nicer, when he wants to hang out.
Feeling guilty, Javi put his phone away and looked around. Ouachita National Forest, 5 miles. Javi frowned.
"What, are we going hiking?" He said listlessly, trying his best not to sound too unhappy. Why else would we be headed to a National Forest?
"We can if you want," Boone said earnestly.
"Well—" Javi tried to think of a way to politely say no fucking way— "The sun's gonna be settin' soon. Where're we stayin'?"
Boone smiled, giving a nervous little laugh. "Somewhere up Blue Knob Road?" he replied. "They've got, uh… dispersed camping."
Blue Knob Road? "Dispersed camping?" Javi laughed, but he wasn't amused. "Boone, it's December."
"I know!" Boone said. "Winter camping! It's great, the weather really helps you get into it. Plus, y'know, I thought this'd be kind of a fun celebration."
Javi resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "Celebration of what?"
"Winter solstice?"
Javi didn't reply. He took his phone out to check the weather— chance of snow. "We're gonna be freezing,"
"I thought gettin' outta the house would cheer you up!" Boone sounded a little hurt that Javi was so unenthusiastic.
"Well why didn't you tell me?" Javi asked, exasperated. "I'd still come, I'd just wanna… prepare."
Boone went quiet for a moment. "…Sorry," He offered.
How do I always get in these situations, Javi lamented. "It's fine." He tried to text Kate the unfortunate update— can you believe he took me camping in December?— but his phone had lost service by that point.
Neither of them spoke for the rest of the drive.
Javi trusted Boone to select a good camping area. He was an expert in dispersed camping, apparently. To Javi, who had grown up in a much larger city than Boone, it was all the same. Before long, he was getting out of the truck— and it was cold. The sun was already out of sight. Javi did not complain, though, just tried to focus on what Boone was saying as he unpacked.
"…I can set up the tent, if you wanna get a fire goin'. You know how to do that?"
"Of course I do," Javi said. "You got any firestarter?"
Boone shook his head, chewing his lip thoughtfully and looking around. "…Maybe you should just collect some stuff, and I'll help you build it with it when I'm done with the tent. I just gotta get that done before we're outta daylight— you're lookin' for dead, dry branches, dry grass, pieces'a bark that've come off…"
"Okay," Javi said, biting back an I'm not an idiot. With that, he left Boone to his own task.
That left him free to worry.
Javi would have had no problem staying in a hotel with Boone— they had already been living together for almost a year, he trusted the other man a whole lot— but this was different. This made him a little nervous. There's no bathroom, nowhere to change, nowhere I could lock a door… anxiously, Javi began to pick at his dry cuticles. What if he accidentally sees me? Javi didn't think Boone was the type to be violently transphobic, but there were so many different ways a possible encounter could go. We're in the middle of nowhere…
Even if Boone was nice about it, getting outed was still something Javi did not want. I want him to like me… heart squeezing with nerves, Javi reflected on his stupid, stupid crush. I already know he's gay… but what if he finds out I don't have a dick, and gets grossed out? Not that he wants me in the first place… what if he starts treating me differently? What if he stops inviting me to hang out with him and his friends? Javi didn't know if he could handle that. There's no way he can find out. No way.
"Javi?"
Javi nearly jumped out of his skin. He hadn't been paying attention, and now Boone had finished setting up the tent, and had snuck up behind him— Javi's heart skipped a beat, as he turned quickly.
"What?" Javi replied, a little harsher than he had intended.
"You got anything?" Boone asked, even though he could very clearly see that Javi had collected no more than two sticks and a handful of yellow grass.
Embarrassed, Javi frowned. "You were really fast," he gave a weak excuse.
"Why, thank you!" Boone said, chipper as always. "I had that tent for years, and it's real easy to set up— we should get started on the fire."
Boone ended up discarding the grass— it was too damp to use— and collecting his own sticks. Javi tried not to feel bad, but he was already in a bad mood… god, I'm just useless, aren't I…
Boone didn't mind, though. He seemed to be having fun, teaching Javi. "Alright, first we gotta clear out a space…"
After digging out a shallow, round little area, surrounding it with rocks, and assembling a bit of a lincoln-log structure, Boone finally pulled out a little book of waterproof matches. "You wanna do the honors?"
Javi, crouched with his arms folded around his knees, shook his head. So Boone lit the fire.
"Let's get cookin'," Boone said then. Ugh, just one thing after the other— Javi was tired. "I've got hot dogs and beer, what do ya want?" Boone asked, standing up and heading over to the cooler in the bed of the truck.
"Just a hot dog," Javi said quietly. He already knew that he was a bit of a lightweight, and didn't want to make any bad choices that night.
Boone seemed to sense Javi's discomfort. "…Me too, I guess," He said, tone still relentlessly cheerful as he brought over the hot dog supplies.
By that point, it was getting quite dark. Everything outside of the ring of campfire light was bathed in deep blues, and the stars were beginning to come out. Javi was quiet, unsure of what to say. What are we even supposed to talk about, all alone like this? For some reason, with the background of crickets and crackling fire, it felt much more intimate than their occasional shared meals in the cramped kitchen at home. How are things going at work? Service any cool cars this week? No, nobody wants to talk about work on the weekend…
"Cold out," Javi settled on. It really was— Even through all his layers (tough jeans, thick wool socks and boots, a t-shirt, a flannel, and his windbreaker), Javi could feel it.
"I got a spare coat, if you need."
Javi shook his head on instinct, but Boone stood up anyway.
"It's one of those fancy electric ones that heats up," He said. "Ty gave it to me for my birthday, but I ain't got a chance to use it yet." By the time Boone returned from where he'd been digging in the cab of the truck, Javi had decided to just appreciate the gesture.
"…Thanks," He said, ignoring the way his face was tingling with a bit of a blush.
"Anytime, man," Boone sighed, plopping back down to sprawl on the ground. Javi fought back a smile— he's cute.
Now more comfortable (both physically and emotionally), Javi relaxed a little. He decided to open up for some conversation.
"So why'd you wanna do a trip like this?" Winter solstice celebration… he doesn't seem the type.
Boone shrugged. "Been a while since I gone camping."
Deciding that his hot dog was sufficiently cooked, Javi paused to retrieve a bun and the condiments. "…Well why me?" He asked, avoiding eye contact. "You could'a brought Tyler,"
Boone nodded, staring serenely at the fire with a soft smile on his face. "I know," He said. "I was just—" He waved his free hand up in the air, struggling to come up with something. "…I was worried about you," He admitted shyly after a moment.
That took Javi entirely off guard. Worried about me? "What?"
"Didn't want you to be alone, I guess." Boone yawned. "Whatever." He tried to brush it off, but Javi could tell he was feeling vulnerable.
"…You don't gotta worry about me," Javi said quietly. I'm nothing to you. We hardly ever hang out, now that I've got a job. Why do you care?
Boone nodded. "I know. You just been actin' weird." He dipped his head to rub the back of his neck, and Javi couldn't see his face. "…Goin' out and spendin' a couple days in the mountains always helps me get outta my head, I thought I'd try an' shake you outta it."
That was the first time Javi had ever considered that Boone undoubtably also experienced bouts of poor mental health. He just seemed so upbeat all the time, it was hard to remember.
"…Sorry," Javi found himself saying, staring into the fire to avoid having to look at Boone.
"Y'aint got nothin' to be sorry for," Boone smiled wide. "Thanks for comin' with me!"
Javi nodded. Still… "I really am fine," He said quietly. "I just get really down in the winter, y'know how it is…" He took a bite of his hot dog only to find that it was still a little too hot. Ow.
"I get it," Boone nodded, beginning to assemble his own dog. "It's like, 'what am I even doin' anymore'— like every day feels the same, everything's dead… that's why I like to come out an' camp when it's cold. Reminds me that I'm alive, even if the trees ain't."
Javi liked that, but he really didn't have much to add besides "You're right." So he just sat in silence after giving that agreement, and both of them began to eat.
Boone, despite making his hot dog after Javi, finished first. He began preparing a second, even as he was still chewing his last bite. "So," He said, mouth full. "Wanna hear a scary story?"
"Sure," Javi said obligingly. Why not.
"I used to camp here all the time when I was a teenager," Boone began. "Me an' T would spend all of spring break up in these mountains."
Javi nodded. He took a sip of his water bottle, and tried not to feel too jealous.
"Last time we ever went, though— year before T went off to college, I must'a been sixteen… I saw somethin'."
Javi breathed a laugh through his nose. "What was it? Aliens, or bigfoot?"
Boone pouted, wind sucked out of his sails. "…Bigfoot," He said.
"Sorry, sorry, keep goin'," Javi sat back, smiling encouragingly. He really was in a much better mood now that he was nice and toasty. "What'd you see?"
"Well… it was a Friday, so we were gettin' pretty worn out by then. Already been out for two or three days. Sorta grumpy, too— T has a hard time sleepin' if it ain't in his bed, so he was real tired— anyway," Boone shook his head. "We'd gone an' jumped in the river earlier that day, and lost track of time, so it was already dark by the time we got goin' on a fire."
"Hm," Javi hummed. He was beginning to grow sleepy— he hadn't fallen asleep until around three the night before.
"T was mad at me for somethin' stupid, so when I was out gettin' firewood and started hearin' things, I thought he was tryna play a prank or somethin'."
"Does he do that a lot?" Javi asked, a little amused.
Boone gave a so-so gesture. "Not so much now that we're grown. So yeah, it was like this— I dunno, sort of a sniffing?"
"A sniffing?" Javi laughed.
"Yeah, y'know how animals sorta check stuff out— and I was hearin' footsteps too, but I was confused, 'cause they weren't in the direction of the campsite… I woulda heard him pass me, y'know?"
Javi nodded, folding his arms over his knees and resting his head. The fire popped loudly, sending sparks up into the air.
"I tried talkin' to him, I was like, 'leave me alone, asshole'— but he didn't answer."
"Mmhm," Javi closed his eyes.
Seeming to grow a little nervous, Boone leaned forward. "That's not all, though— soon as I said it, all the noise stopped— all the shufflin', and crunching leaves, and sniffin' around— and I realized, all the normal sounds, crickets, and bugs, and, like, bats… I wasn't hearin' any of it anymore." His voice was a whisper now.
"Creepy," Javi said.
"So I booked it back to camp, and guess who was right there? He'd never left."
Javi secretly thought that it was very likely that Boone had just imagined those things, but he didn't say so. "Thought you said you saw somethin'," He pointed out.
"Well, I did!" Boone said. "Me an' Ty just ate our dinner and went to bed, but I couldn't sleep— I was freaked out, but he wouldn't believe me."
Wonder why, Javi thought.
"He was passed out when it came by," Boone continued, shuffling closer to the fire as the wind picked up a little. "The one time he slept through the night…" He shook his head, rotating his hot dog over the fire. "Swear to god it was walkin' around on two feet, knockin' shit over and trashing our campsite."
Javi waited for the thrilling climax of the story, but after a moment he realized that that was it. He blinked his eyes open. "…What'd it look like?"
Boone grew a little sheepish then. "Well, it was big," He said.
"You didn't see it?" Javi grinned, teasing. "What, too scared to look?"
Boone shook his head indignantly. "You'd understand, if you were there."
Javi shrugged. "So you think it was bigfoot?"
"What else would it be?" Boone frowned.
Javi actually wasn't sure— he'd only moved to Arkansas recently. "Well, what sorta animals do you got here?"
Boone took his second hot dog from the fire and inspected it. "…Deer, turkeys, raccoons… it was bigger'n a racoon, though, and a turkey or a deer wouldn't try to steal our food."
"How 'bout a bear?"
Boone shook his head. "I've never seen a bear 'round here."
"That doesn't mean they aren't here," Javi argued lightheartedly. "Bears usually avoid people, unless they're lookin' to snack on your leftovers."
Boone shuddered. "Good thing I've got one of those heavy-duty coolers, I doubt a bear'll get into it."
Javi looked over at the truck, but it was too dark for him to see. "I hope so." But now that he was thinking about it, he was wondering about the other wildlife in the area. That was far scarier than any ghost story Boone could come up with. "…What else lives around here?"
Boone shrugged. "Snakes, birds, rodents…" He didn't seem all too worried. "We don't really gotta worry about this, 'cause it's so cold, but the mosquitos and ticks are the real killer,"
"Anything venomous?" Javi asked.
"Copperheads, mostly. Black widows."
Javi pulled the warm coat tighter around him.
"But it's winter, you don't gotta worry about 'em."
"Guess that means we don't gotta worry about bears, either, huh?" Javi thought aloud. "'Cause they hibernate and stuff."
Boone nodded sagely. "Like I said, everything's dead this time of year, 'cept us."
Javi gave a gentle smile. "Not dead," He reminded. "Just sleeping."
After Boone finished his second hot dog, it was pretty clear it was time to turn in. Javi kept nodding off in the middle of Boone's long-winded sentences, and Boone seemed to be growing a little slow and sleepy as well.
But before bed, Javi had to pee.
This was something he'd been worrying about for a good twenty minutes, and for a moment he considered just waiting, and getting up in the middle of the night to do it in secrecy— but it was so damn cold, he was certain he'd end up deciding to just stay nice and warm in his sleeping bag. Well, Tyler's sleeping bag. It was already rolled out on the little camping cot (ridiculously too large for it, flopping over the sides— seriously, it must have been practically queen-sized) when he ducked into the tent to search through his backpack for his toothbrush and toothpaste.
Boone wasn't shy about relieving himself nearby— he didn't even go all the way out of sight, just turned his back to Javi— but Javi knew that wouldn't cut it for him. If only I'd worn my other packer… I would have, if I knew we'd be camping…
So instead of just pulling the shaft of the small, soft prosthetic out, Javi had to trek further out into the woods and pull his jeans and boxers (and cumbersome, non-STP packer) down around his knees so he could squat down to pee. It could be worse, he thought. Still, he felt very exposed, in the darkness like that…
By the time Javi had finished relieving himself, brushed his teeth, and hurried back to their campsite, Boone was already tucked into his threadbare sleeping bag. "Was wonderin' when you'd get back," He said conversationally.
Javi didn't answer, observing that Boone seemed to have changed out of his jeans. Javi himself had brought a pair of warm, comfortable flannel pajama pants, but in the tent like that… it was such close quarters… what if he sees me when I'm changing, and realizes my dick isn't real? Javi decided to just sleep in his jeans. He gave a halfhearted hum of acknowledgement, and made his way to his borrowed little set-up.
Inside that big, fancy sleeping bag, paired with all those layers, Javi was not wanting for warmth. He was perfectly comfortable, and he knew he'd easily be able to drop off— if only Boone would quit moving around.
Every few seconds, it seemed, he was shifting around, curling tighting around himself, adjusting his pillow— Javi couldn't ignore it. The tent was dark, but Boone was only maybe a foot away, and his sleeping mat was made of such a noisy, waterproof material… what's his problem…
"Freezin' my fuckin' ass off," Boone grunted in reply.
"Put your pants back on."
"I'm wearin' sweatpants, these're warmer."
Javi was stumped. "…Well, do you want your coat back?"
"No," Boone replied stubbornly. "Don't want you gettin' cold,"
Rolling from his back to his side so he could properly glare at Boone, Javi heaved a big sigh. For a minute, he just lie there, until the deep, squeaky sound of an owl's call resounded from somewhere nearby.
"That's just an owl," Javi whispered, voice light and a little teasing.
"I know," Boone replied, rolling over to face him. "I told you, I'm not scared."
Javi decided to let it go, though his voice was shaking— after all, that could just be from the cold, which was a much more pressing concern than bigfoot. "Just take the coat. I'm wearin' plenty of layers,"
Boone shook his head. "I'll be fine, just gotta stick it out until, y'know… my body heat warms up the sleeping bag…" He sighed. "Night, Javi."
Javi only felt worse when the wind picked up. He couldn't quite tell— the darkness was just so all-encompassing— but he was also pretty sure that it was beginning to snow. Heavy and wet, those little tack tack tack sounds on the nylon seemed to echo around the small space. Boone pulled up the hood of his hoodie.
Heart soft after an evening by the fire, Javi couldn't stop thinking about Boone. I'm nice and warm, and he's just miserable… he reminisced fondly then, on all the nights Boone had invited him along to Tyler's house for a get-together, nights that ended in the pair of them dozing off on the couch and waking up just a little closer than they might have sober… I'm probably bein' stupid…
"Boone," Javi whispered into the darkness.
Boone didn't reply immediately. But he did reply. "What?"
"Why don'cha come share with me?"
Boone paused, stone still.
"I mean, it's plenty big— you're tellin' me you never shared this with Tyler?" Javi whispered, almost an accusation.
"Well—" Boone began haltingly. "Yeah, but… are you sure?"
That confirmation only cemented Javi's decision. Tyler got to share a sleeping bag with Boone… face warm with a jealous flush, he nodded. "Of course," He said. "It's no big deal."
Boone thought on it for almost a full minute. Javi was beginning to think he'd actually fallen asleep, when finally— "'Kay," He whispered. "Get down here. We can't both fit on the cot."
Awkwardly, loudly in that polyester sleeping bag, confused in the dark, Javi relocated to Boone's sleeping mat. He didn't say a word, just pulled open the folds, and Boone quickly slipped inside.
"Jesus, Javi, you're like a furnace," Boone breathed, only inches away, lying on his side facing Javi. He smelled of mint, having had no water to rinse his mouth out after brushing his teeth.
"Well, I've got this coat…" Javi said, self consciously avoiding eye contact and staring at the top of the tent above him.
"It turns off automatically after a half hour," Boone told him. "Fire hazard."
"Oh." Javi didn't bother feeling stupid. He was so warm already, he didn't even bother turning it back on. He closed his eyes, resting back against the extra little travel pillow Boone had brought him, and tried not to think about Boone's breath tickling his neck. Is this weird? Does he think I'm weird, for suggesting it?
Boone spoke up again after a few minutes of silence. "Sorry," He said quietly. "Y'know, for draggin' you out here… middle of winter…"
Javi smiled. He hoped it was dark enough that Boone couldn't see it, though. "It's okay," He said. "I'm havin' fun."
Boone heaved a nice big sigh, though this time it was out of contentment rather than annoyed resignation. "…Alright," He said. "You wanna be the big spoon, or the little spoon?"
Javi couldn't tell if Boone was joking. He had a very odd sense of humor, after all, and Javi was tired… "Shut up," He said, giving an exhausted laugh.
Boone laughed. "G'night," He said. "For real this time." With that, he rolled over and relaxed.
They didn't cuddle. They didn't talk. Lord knows they didn't spoon— at least not on purpose. Javi had always been one to move in his sleep, though…
His face was numb with cold when he woke up, but everything below the neck was perfectly warm and loose and comfortable— and draped around Boone.
Javi didn't even notice, at first— it was late in the morning, and the sun had long-since come up, but this felt like the first fitful night of rest he'd had in months. He didn't want it to be over.
Boone's back was nice and warm against his chest, the slight dip of his waist soft in the crook of Javi's elbow, and though his dark hair was getting all up in Javi's face, he found that he didn't mind. That nice, floral-scented shampoo was familiar. Javi occasionally siphoned off of it when his own ran out.
So he didn't open his eyes, just breathed in deeply and sighed.
Unfortunately, Boone was already awake. "Hey there, buddy," He whispered, voice a little creaky after a long night. "Have a nice dream?" His voice sounded rich with mirth, but Javi had no idea what might have been so funny. Still half-asleep, he just groaned— same thing he did when Boone tried to wake him up after a night at Tyler's house— and buried his face in Boone's hair.
A little shiver went up Boone's spine; Javi felt the motion travel all the way from his tummy up to where his nose was squished against the back of Boone's neck. When he didn't move, Boone began to shuffle around awkwardly, squirming back and forth, arching his back…
Javi inhaled deeply through his nose, and yawned, stretching and untangling himself from Boone. Huh…? After a full three seconds, the words finally registered in his brain. What?!
Jolting back like he'd been burned, muscles all over tingling with the sudden movement, Javi rolled over. He didn't have a whole lot of room, though, and his pillow had been lost in the shuffle last night— he dove his head into the sleeping bag, heart beating out of his chest. What? Does he mean what I think—? Mindlessly, he groped downward to feel his own crotch, confirming with dread what Boone had implied— my packer got into a weird position last night, and the silicone is already so much harder than a regular penis… it totally feels like a boner…
"No I wasn't," He said, voice high with panic.
Boone hadn't moved, but he did crane his neck to look over his shoulder at Javi. When he found that he'd disappeared, he lifted up the sleeping bag to peek inside, shedding a cascade of light into Javi's hiding spot. "…Yes you were, I could feel it."
Oh God, this is the worst… Javi felt sick to his stomach with mortification. "Well, it's not what you think it is."
"What else would it be?" Boone asked teasingly, rolling over onto his back. At least he's not hard, Javi though. "…That a, uh…" He glanced around, looking for inspiration. "I dunno, that a hot dog in your pocket, or are you just—"
"Shut up!" Javi snapped, voice wavering shamefully. He squeezed his eyes shut. He's gonna think I'm such a creep, he thought unhappily, heart pounding all the way up in his throat. What a stupid misunderstanding…
Suddenly, Boone's voice was a thousand times softer, and he leaned in curiously. "Hey, what's the matter?" He asked quietly. "I'm sorry for messin' around, I didn't mean— I didn't realize you were so…" He trailed off, unsure what to say. "…Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Javi told him, voice still shaking.
"No way," Boone scooted as far as the sleeping bag would allow, and rolled so he could face Javi. "What is it, are you— are you… is it 'cause I was sorta rubbin' on you?"
Javi shook his head. In truth, he hadn't even felt it. "I…" He took a deep breath, then decided to finally poke his head out so he could get some air. It was hot inside the sleeping bag, and it smelled like Boone, and it was making his head spin with want. "…I dunno, I just— don't want you to hate me?"
"Oh," Boone blinked. "…Well, you don't gotta worry 'bout that," He chuckled awkwardly. "I sorta— this happens with T a lot, too, I get it."
"What?" Javi couldn't stop the affronted glare appearing on his face. "What's going on with you and Tyler?" He demanded, propping himself up on his elbow. As soon as the words left his mouth, he was embarrassed. I sound like a jealous lover.
Boone sighed. "Nothing," He rolled back onto his back and observed the sunlight glowing softly through the tent walls. "…Not in a long time." His voice was tinged with sadness, and Javi's expression softened.
"…Sorry," He said awkwardly.
Boone shook his head. "It's whatever."
Javi rolled onto his back (while discreetly checking that he wasn't accidentally making any suspicious lumps in the sleeping bag), and then Boone apologized too.
"Sorry," He breathed a sigh.
"It's okay," Javi said. Maybe he was still a little stupid from just waking up, but now that he was thinking about it... "I… didn't really mind, y'know… bein' so close."
"Me neither," Boone said with a little laugh. "Well, obviously, I guess…" Then he sat up, clearing his throat. "I, uh… I can get breakfast started by myself, if you wanna— y'know, take care of it." He was looking away from Javi, but Javi could just barely see that the tips of his ears were pink. He dismissed it, though— maybe it's just from the cold.
Realizing that Boone was waiting for an answer, Javi sat up too, a little too quickly. "No, I—" He coughed awkwardly. "I— it's already… gone," he cringed, scrubbing over his face with one hand. "…Holy shit," he felt almost lightheaded with all the weird feelings rushing through his body.
Boone just laughed, and when Javi looked at him, he looked away quickly. "…Okay, then, you get started on the fire. You remember how?"
Javi sighed. "'Course I do." Internally, as he followed Boone outside the tent, he wondered how long he could keep this up— his secret, and his stupid crush on Boone.
