“Happy birthday Mrs. Padalecki!” Your students cheered as you walked into class Friday morning. You blushed as they all blew you kisses. It was moments like these that mad teaching mischievous little first graders worth it.
“Oh, my goodness!” You grinned. “What a surprise, thank you so much, friends!” As you sat in your chair but the front board, the kids started to come up to you, handing you homemade cards and giving you hugs.
By the time everyone had sat back down, your cheeks were sore from smiling, you had tears trying to make their way down your cheeks, and a stack of the sweetest birthday cards you had ever gotten.
“So you smart cookies, how did you know it was my birthday today?” You asked after you put the cards on your desk and wiped your eyes.
You had been expecting one of your kids to tell you a silly story about how everyone has birthdays, it was a story you heard every time someone had a birthday in your class. However, you didn’t expect to see your husband walk in the room from the hall with a giant grin on his face.
“I may have had a hand in that!” He said proudly, holding out a beautiful bouquet of daisies. Your eyes widened as you tried to think of a school appropriate response. You didn’t think you were going to get to see him for another two weeks, he was supposed to still be filming up in Vancouver.
“Jared…” You said, still trying to process the fact that he was standing right in front of you as your kids started to giggle. “What are… How… What’s going on?” You laughed happily, meeting him in the middle of the room.
“Happy birthday Beautiful.” He hummed, pressing a kiss to your forehead as a round of ‘ew’s chorused through your classroom. You smiled and hugged him tightly, knowing you were going to have the best birthday you’d had in years.

The way your fingers fit in mine
It's five plus five, not rocket science
This day in time, that's hard to find
It's true
The road we're on ain't a traffic jam
It's a Sunday drive on a piece of land
It's paradise as long as I'm with you
You smiled at Jared as you sat next to him in his old truck. The sun was setting and y’all were driving out to the old pond on the edge of his land. He was finally home after filming the new show he was on, and while you were glad he was having a lot of success, you missed your boyfriend more than you thought possible. You reached over and slid your hand into his, your fingers fitting together like pieces of a puzzle.
You and Jared had been together since high school. He had been you first everything, your first boyfriend, your first kiss, your first lover, and your first love. When he told you, he wanted to start acting you supported him the entire way. Your relationship had survived the long distance when he was filming with Gilmore Girls and everything else he had filmed. It was hard, but it was the moments like this that got you through it.
It's like one, two, three
Just as easy as can be
Just the way you look at me
You make me smile
Ain't no need to complicate it, we both know that's overrated
We've been there, it's safe to say it ain't our style
It's just that simple, S-I-M-P-L-E
Simple as can be
It's just that simple, S-I-M-P-L-E
Simple as can be
Jared looked over at you and gave you a smile that made your breath hitch and your heart skip a beat. He brought your hand to his lips, brushing a kiss over you knuckles. You grinned and leaned over, kissing his cheek.
“I love you.” You hummed softly, settling back beside him. Jared chuckled, keeping ahold of your hand as he draped his arm around your shoulders.
“I love you more baby.” he said, pulling you closer to his side as he drove. A soft melody surrounded you as the wind blew through the open windows. The moment was perfect, it felt so surreal, almost like it was the setting for a romance novel. You closed your eyes, breathing it all, trying to commit everything about that instant to memory.
We used to live on Instagram
Worry 'bout who all gives a damn
'Bout where we've been and where we ended up
Then I met you and you met me
And all the rest is history an epiphany
That all we need is us
As you pulled up to the edge of the pond, Jared opened up his door, sliding out before helping you out as well. Forgetting the world was almost too easy when you were with Jared. A few years before you’d both give up your social media, realizing that you were so much happier without it. Without the distractions from the outside world, everything seemed to mean so much more. You waited for Jared to grab the blanket and his guitar out of the bed of the truck before walking down to the dock.
“Jare?” You looked up at him as you laid your head on his lap after the blanket was laid out. “Can we just stay here forever?” You asked, a smiled turning up the corners of your mouth.
Jared carded his fingers through your hair as he smiled back at you. “Only if you agree to stay here as my fiancé.” He whispered, reaching for the ring box he had hidden in the blanket. Your eyes widened as you gazed up at him. You sat up, straddling his lap as you pressed your lips to his.
“Oh my god.” You whispered, still completely shocked. “Yes, yes of course, Jared.” You laughed breathlessly. You cupped his cheeks as you kissed him again as his arms wrapped around your waist. He pulled you closer as he smiled against your lips, laughing softly as you both pulled away. He opened the little blue velvet box to reveal a simple gold band.

It’s been eleven years since that night. You and Jared had been married for ten years now. You smiled over at him, across the cab of the same old truck. This time you had your two boys in the middle between you. The boys chattered away happily as Jared slotted his fingers through yours, toying with the same simple band he gave you all those years ago.
It had become a tradition for you, Jared, and your sweet boys to head down to the pond every time his hiatus started. He was still filming Supernatural and you had gained so many friends and so many people who had become family to you. You had never imagined your life to end up this way, never thought it was possible to be this happy.
You smiled over at your family. Jared was laughing and swimming with the boys as you sat on the dock, cradling your swollen stomach. Your mama had always told you it was the simple things in life that brought the most joy, and you couldn’t agree more.
