Januik Winery
A visit to Januik Winery last week left me with mixed feelings about the experience. I loved the tasting room and the wines, but the customer service was not what a wine enthusiast is looking for in a winery visit. More on this later, but first the wines.
Overall I found the wines to be elegant and restrained, with delicate complexity, mild structure and interesting flavors. They were also good values in a QPR sense.
2008 Stillwater Viognier. Peanuts and pear with toffee Lime and peanut on the palate. Very nice wine 89.
2009 Stillwater Viognier. Classic nose of stone fruits. Nectarine and fig on the palate. 89
2008 Cold Creek Chardonnay. wow big nose of butter and tropical fruits. Mouth is huge and apply. 90
2009 Bachus Riesling. Orange blossom honey and apple. On the sweet side but full of flavor with mead and lemon Perhaps a little lacking in acidity. 88
2007 Merlot. Interesting egg nog on the nose. Vanilla and nutmeg predominate in the middle palate amid classic plum and brambles. A good sipper. 88
2007 Syrah. An intense nose of coffee, like putting your nose into a bag of fresh ground beans. Flavors of black and blue berries and more coffee rounding out a nicely tannic finish. My favorite wine of the tasting. 92
Now onto the tasting room experience. The staff of young women were all very attractive, which I’m certainly not going to complain about, but they seemed much more interested in each other than in the wine they were pouring. I got the sense that they were into the glamour of working at a major winery and didn’t have any sense of the wines they were pouring. Moreover, Mike Januik himself was in the tasting room and though I tried to talk him up he, himself, was much more interested in his tasting room staff than he was in his customers. I bought a bottle of the Lewis Vineyard Syrah anyway even though I won’t be going back to the winery any time soon, no matter how attractive the tasting room staff may be.
