"Bas bhaiya, yhi utar do." You waved from the backseat of the auto. The tall green branches, colorful flowers, countless earthen pots and vases- you smiled at how fast and how easily Anand had made this place his.
You paid the driver and opened the short iron gate. It was past six thirty and you were here to remind him of your date. Your feet walked past the bikes and the cars, passing a few workers of the garage.
Before you could ask, they all pointed inside, telling you where to find him. You blushed, no one asked questions anymore, no one teased you both anymore.
It was difficult to decide what you preferred, the teasing or the soft smiles of acceptance. You two were just dating and somehow people had sailed past the 'omg they're dating' phase.
For God's sake, you two haven't even said the 'L' word yet. It was almost annoying how chill people were with you two.
You stood at a distance and waited for him to wrap up the work. He didn't notice how each one of them pointed towards you to the other and left quietly.
For a moment you stood in the silence, admiring his built and his focus.
You chuckled at how his eyes immediately went to the clock.
You threw your arms around his neck and pressed your face between his shoulder blades, looking a kid clinging to his back.
He grinned and turned to face you. "Gimme a minute, I'll change fatafat and we'll go."
You examined the shiny silver parts of the bike lying around. Anand was a weird guy. You snorted, he was walking the line between modern and conservative.
You were quiet taken aback when you first talked to him. He had passionately ranted about the ocean water pollution for half hour to you, well to everyone in the bus but you were right next to him. Naturally most of his focus was on you.
Of course, after that you had written him off as just another environment activist in your memory.
Next time you two met, he was raving yet again but you were quiet irritated by work and you decided to be a gremlin and interrupt him by posing questions.
He was not the one to back away, you realized. It also dawned how you had effectively trapped yourself in a heated discussion, unintentionally.
By the time, your stop came your throat dry and scratchy because of all the high pitched debate and screeches from you.
You wondered just how many times you were going to run into him in your life. Instead of meeting a bus, you spotted him in a park.
Maybe you secretly like the discussions because you had already waved at him.
You walked over to him and gestured him to walk with you. Few steps ahead was a juice stall. "Need to stay hydrated to keep up with you."
Busy with paying for the lemonade, you missed the shy grin on his face.
You smiled remembering how date-like was that walk in the park. He bought you ice-cream, as a 'reward' of doing your homework on electric and natural gas debate.
You ducked your head to hide the faint blush.
Fourth was in the room you were in. Your scooter had broke down and you had dragged it for over a kilometer before spotting the first garage.
You could no longer hide from the fact that he was interesting and you wanted to learn more. So you gave him your number.
To your disappointment and anxiety, it had been radio silence from him for a couple of weeks. Everytime your phone lit up, you'd run to it in hopes that it could be him.
The name was stuck in your head, much to your embarrassment.
Finally, he had messaged on one stormy night. You almost dropped the phone on your face. He had texted you.
A shiver of excitement ran through you. You wanted to tie the thin blanket like a cape and fly away.
Slowly, talking to him over texts became a routine. You felt like a ten year old all over again. He made you giggle, twirl your hair and had you blushing like an idiot.
You definitely couldn't take those sweet messages. Your heart flipped and raced every time his notifications popped up.
Of course, you really really weren't ready for phone calls. Surprisingly he was the one to initiate those. You weren't much of a call person.
You preferred texts. They were easy. You could have your freak out and manage to appear coherent. How were you supposed to stay calm when you'd be able to hear his voice?
Of course, he picked up on that. Of course he was sweet about it. Of course he said that he understood. Of course he had slowly eased you into those. Adorable idiot.
Idiot because now you were hooked. Now if he didn't call you atleast once in a day, you go crazy. You think about all the possibilities and outcomes and manage to send yourself in panic.
He had told you about Janatha Garage, like anyone in the city didn't know. You knew too but when he bought that topic up, it suddenly dawned on you just how reckless he could be.
Janatha garage was known to help people and they helped in the most self sacrificing manner.
This guy that you could maybe, possibly like was going around doing self sabotaging stuff. Your heart missed a beat and thumped against your chest painfully loud.
All this while, you had been careful not to sound like an obsessed fool but then you asked him out for a date, a date after he told you about his life.
He must think of you as a dumbass. You chastised yourself mentally.
You called yourself every synonym of idiot in dictionary and ran away like a shy wild animal.
Next morning, you read a simple text saying, "yes." This time you did tie your dupatta around your neck like a cape and danced around your apartment.
You almost got lost in his smile but he waved his hand in your face. You bit your lip to stop a dumb smile of your own.
"Please, as if I'd ever chose that." It wasn't your fault that he was an absolute Greek God underneath that lose shirt. You liked to hold onto him while you felt wind in your hair.
Golden streetlights reflected off the concrete. Resting your head on his shoulder you watched trees pass by. Crowd became sparse and it became colder.
You recognised the route. Giggling you pressed a quick kiss in the crook of his neck. He was taking you to back to where you both had your first date.
He owned a small cabin in middle of thick forest like growth alongside a meadow patch on a small hill. You felt the same butterflies that you felt when he took you there the first time.
You had mentioned stargazing as your perfect date in passing, and he remembered. You wanted to hold on and never let go. Your heart burst in joy. You loved that place like you loved your home.
For a second you recalled how your friends used to tease you with 'love'. You always glared and waved them away. As much as you wished for it be true, you didn't want to get your hopes up.
You would wait for him to say it before you even decide to indulge in any kind of fantasy.
It had been a year. You two had been dating for a year. You kind of yearned to hear those words.
Everyone around you was in love and married. You were slightly jealous.
Anand wasn't big on pda and you didn't mind at all. You were private about your affections as well but couldn't he like hold you close for once in public. His hands always wandered in private, he always had to touch you in some way.
You felt childish but you wanted him to clearly say how he felt about you for once. He asked you on dates sure, but he was always vague about his feelings.
You knew he wouldn't have dated you for months if he didn't like you but you wanted to hear it so bad. You wanted verbal affirmation that it wasn't all in your head. You two had kissed only twice, twice. Twice! Your first being two months back.
Snorting, you mentally facepalmed. This guy waited for so many dates to kiss you, you'd have to be little more patient if you wanted to know if he loved you.
Is "knowing" that he likes you enough but?
You got off and ran to the blanket spread over wet grass. You looked up, away from the city lights, the stars looked so beautiful.
He came behind you, wrapping his arms on your waist. You felt hot and tingly where he touched you.
Chuckling you took your eyes off the stars and craned your neck a little to look at him. He was so close. So close, and he was looking down at you.
You felt a really strong urge to lean up and kiss him. Your eyes darted between his eyes and lips. Tightening his hold on your waist, he broke the eye contact and looked up.
You would be lying if you said you didn't feel a tiny stab of disappointment in your gut. You understood that he was a shy person. You didn't like how after months of knowing each other he was still a little hesitant.
Deciding to ignore your thoughts, you walked out of his arms and sat down comfortably on the blanket. You looked at the dimming lights of the village from an elevation. You felt the warmth of candle flame in your heart.
You felt faint, this must be how magic felt like. There was no other word to describe the twinkling stars woven in the blanket of sky bleed into the golden glow of the city. Maybe it the man sitting beside you, he sat angled towards you. You suspected he was the magic of this moment.
Your shoulder touched his chest, he nudged against your head. The rough texture of his beard tickled you, gave you butterflies. It oddly felt like an embrace.
Moments like these gave your torturous thoughts a break. He was here. He was with you. After a full day of work and tension, he was choosing to spend his time with you.
What if you're reading too much in the situation, what if he doesn't feel the way you do, what if you don't mean as much to him, what if.. what if.. what ifs..
You pressed your lips, trying to stop your chin from quivering.
Why did you have to ruin everything?
You were thankful of the veil your hair created between you and him. After dealing with everyone else's problems, he didn't need to you to bring his mood down further.
But he's here, isn't he? He must feel something.
You tried to distract yourself.
Anand felt serene. He was here with one of the most stunning woman he ever met. He had lost count of how many times he had replayed each memory with you in his head.
You were consuming him and he wouldn't have it any other way.
It was astounding how they had been together for months and he still got flustered the same way he was when they first went on a date. The butterflies never faded, not even a bit.
He often laid awake at nights, trying to make sense of everything. He wondered why someone as breathtaking as you would chose him.
He saw the doubts. He saw the quiet shivers. He saw the silent tears. He saw the secret smiles and pain, he saw how you lit up around him. He saw how everyday you chose him, after every doubt, after struggling against yourself, the world and him- you chose him.
As for him, he never saw it coming. He never suspected anything. He met you once and after that you took up a little more of his time, a little more space of his thoughts everytime he met you.
Then one day he woke with you on his mind. He had to try a little harder to focus on work that day.
He looked at you every day when he woke up and he listened to your voice everytime he went to sleep.
Then he started catching himself thinking of you while working. The most embarrassing was the goofy grin that everyone would tease him about.
Anand tried to resist you, your thoughts, his feelings till one night he dreamt of you. Of your peaceful happy life, as a married couple.
Smiling, he immediately resigned himself to this beautiful heartache. He wished he could tell you how you had become his life.
All day, he longed to be with you and when he was with you, he longed to kiss away all the doubts.
He hadn't been afraid of someone so much, but he was afraid you would soon run out of your patience because he was a coward.
"You are the touch of divinity in my life.."
He thanked his lucky stars. Finally, finally he said it. It was nowhere close to expressing just how truly deeply he felt for you but it was something.
It was so quiet, you almost missed it.
Both of you moved a little closer, Anand held your hand over your stomach, weaving your fingers together.
Your back was pressed to him, you tried to snuggle further, "Anand if you're not ready, you don't-"
"Jaan, I've been meaning to say this for weeks now."
Happy tears rolled down your cheeks and dried up on his shirt. You gave a watery chuckle.
"I know, i havent said this yet but I've been feeling- I have-"
His thumb slowly caressed your knuckles, trying to find the words. He knew there were no words, no words could ever encapsulate the way his caught whenever you laughed. No words could express the expansive, ecstatic joy he felt when you looked at him with those big eyes.
There wasn't a count for how many times he replayed your first kiss in his head.
"Y/n, if you ask me when I started to feel this way, I won't have an answer. For me, there was no one moment. It just happened, you made your home in my heart, in my thoughts, in my life."
He didn't know why he felt so emotional all of a sudden.
"Every time we met, you molded a space for yourself right beside my soul. I need you like I need it to live. There was no one moment when I thought ki I love you. No."
He took deep breath, feeling his shirt get damp.
"The love had always been there, each second with you only nurtured it, nourished it. Slowly it bloomed into this beautiful creeper that now holds my soul to my heart. I can't remember not being in love with you."
Sniffling, Y/n grabbed his shirt and pulled him down. Your fingers wiped the tears that had spilled over tenderly.
"I love you." He breathed out at last. It felt as if his heart was about burst.
Giggling through tears of love, you smacked his chest lightly, "I hate you. How do I make my I love you sound beautiful after that breathtaking speech?"
Anand's heart only heard that you loved him. Not caring about the dirt, he pinned you against the grass as lush as his love and began peppering small kisses all over your face, pronouncing each one with an 'I love you'.
