One of the most amazing things about my grandmother wasn't just that she lived to be 101, but that she lived in the same city for that full century, truly witness to history firsthand. This Black History Month, I'm thrilled to share a book that makes me think of her and her wonderful stories. Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard's "Aunt Flossie's Hats (And Crab Cakes Later)" (1991) tells of two little girls' treasured weekly Sunday visits to their elderly auntie. As they play dress-up in her fancy hats, she reminisces for the girls about the times and places she wore them, sharing personal snapshots of history from the end of WWI to cherished times with family. James Ransome's almost photographic oil paintings give a beautifully intimate feeling to the stories, making them resonate even more.
