can't help but compare characters I love and the one between Laurent and James speaks to me. They have a lot in common, same author, same looks, same sort of manner. I've been trying to define the differences between them, because there are meaningful differences, but I've been struggling to contain them in proper concepts. I think I've finally found a metaphor that gets at the essence of their difference: Laurent is a cat and James is a dog.
Laurent is observant and intelligent. He has his own agenda, his own routines. He can be very sweet but if you threaten him or back him into a corner, he will come at you claws first. He wants your affection, but he's sensitive and it can suddenly become too much, and he'll be there again with the claws.
James is desperate for approval. You can use him as your guard dog, he will attack others on your command, but he's loyal to you. Doesn't matter how many times you hit him, he will come back to you with his tail between his legs.
