The fact that I didnāt know The Wilds got cancelled until I saw people talking about it in the First Kill tag just now,,,,Iām literally ending my life what the fuck is happening. WHY does sapphic-centered media get dismissed and shoved to the side and discarded so easily? I wasnāt the biggest fan of First Kill, but by audience engagement and viewership ALONE that show deserved to be renewed. I think if it had gotten the budget a concept like that deserved, I (and many others who thought it could have been better) would have enjoyed it so much more. Same goes for The Wilds. But they would never do that. They would never put additional effort into sapphic media to make it as great as it could and should be because they donāt value wlw relationships as much as they value straight relationships and mlm relationships. Sapphics āarenāt palatableā so therefore they arenāt seen as worth the time, effort, and faith that shows like Heartstopper and Young Royals and The Summer I Turned Pretty are seemingly worth. Iām so tired. I am tired of finding and seeing myself and my love for women represented in media only to have it tarnished and tainted in every case except for when weāre fetishize-able. Itās fine to show sapphics fucking and making out and being traumatized with depressing storylines but let us have deep, complex emotions and plot lines that go beyond the male and patriarchal gaze? Let us have a space in formerly straight-centered tropes? Oh, of course not, THATS where they draw the line. They only value us when they can sexualize us; giving us varied, diverse, and thought-provoking stories would humanize us and they donāt want that. Because then they would have to feel uncomfortable in their sexualization. This goes beyond a couple of shows being cancelled, this is ingrained in companies like Netflix and Amazon and it needs to be talked about more.
