Shortly after announcing their 11th studio album, Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not, Dinosaur Jr. have shared the song “Tiny” off of the album. It’s an uptempo, laid-back slice of melodic noise pop, the kind that Mascis has been perfecting for years. His vocals are higher in the mix than normal, and he’s able to capture an impressively gentle tone despite how aggressive the guitar playing is. Eventually the guitar playing simmers down and provides a nice backdrop for some stellar, subdued Barlow bass lines alongside Murphy’s frantic tom taps. True to proper Mascis form the guitar solo’s are blistering hellscapes of distorted fury, offsetting his sleepy drawl seamlessly. “Tiny” doesn’t challenge the notion of what Dinosaur Jr. do by any stretch of the imagination, but it suggests subtle tweaks in the formula. It’s another affirmation that even after three albums into this reunited original Dinosaur Jr. lineup, they still have yet to show any signs of legitimate regression.
