Veterans Day. I’ve been reading a ton of military history. The internet has killed my reading but trying to get back on track. Jack Lummus and Pat Tillman. Pro football players who left the game, enlisted and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Michael Murphy, a Seal, Long Island boy, killed in Afghanistan, Medal of Honor winner, part of the Lone Survivor story. Sidney Shachnow, a Jewish holocaust survivor, who became a Major General in the US Army. Just finished his autobiography Hope and Honor. His description of his family’s holocaust story is both touching and maddening. As a kid I planned on enlisting. Went to college instead, Flirted with joining after undergrad. Big regret that I didn’t serve.. I think we would be a better nation if we all did. Perhaps we would have a greater connection with each other.
