Broadly speaking though

The main stages of my art look something like this. It isnt a concrete system, i change it up and go between each stage constantly, but this is how i usually draw.

I think of black through the same system i think of colour. Colour can be used to detail but it is all light or lackthereof. Black lines will be the darkest, most defined part of a picture. No colour can be darker than it.

If i put lines down first, I'm working in flat values and i feel like i'm boxing myself in- as i go to paint, i'll often feel like i'm "arguing" with the absolute shadows of the line art and forcing myself to conform to them

When i paint first, i can plan for lines much more organically. I can plan for black WITH THE CONTEXT of the colour and how i use light within the painting process. I can see where the colour is rich, and where it fades away, and then i use black to back it all up.
