Buck hears his heartbeat in his ears more than anything. Stay engaged? - Or: Another fake engagement fic.

“—It’s fine, Eddie, really. I’ve been meaning to set something up in here anyway for if you guys came to visit, so. It worked out.” Eddie can’t stop gaping, mouth flopping a little bit like a goldfish. Buck, all seventy miles of him, is fluttering about Chris’ old room—the guest room—propping several large IKEA boxes against different walls. Eddie says faintly, “I was just gonna grab a nice air mattress.” Buck looks at him, incredulous. “No,” he says slowly, “you guys are going to be comfortable while you’re staying here. Even if it’s only for a little while.” ~ Or: Buck buys Chris a bedroom set. Eddie asks him out to dinner about it.

Eddie processes this for a moment, all while moving this way and that for the nurse’s vital checks. “Okay, wait… what about my friend? Is he okay?” The nurse pauses, stepping back from the bed, and shares a look with her attending. “What friend?” “Buck,” Eddie says, starting to get frustrated. “Evan Buckley. Six-foot-two, big guy, kind of hard to miss. We were driving home to Los Angeles.” At their silence, he urges, “Someone ran us off the road.” The doctor and the nurse share another look, this time marginally more worried. “There was no one else in the car when they got to you,” the doctor says, and Eddie’s ears start ringing. ~ Or: In which Buck gets taken from Eddie, and neither of them stop fighting to get back to their family.

“The first step after confirming interest in applying would be a cursory credit check, to make sure you meet our baseline minimum of seven—” Eddie snorts from behind Buck, who tries not to let the realtor—Samuel? Sebastian?—see his eyelid twitch. He pauses anyway. “Eddie, right? Did you have a question?” “Not a question, no,” he says lightly, stepping up next to Buck, who smiles tightly at him with eyes screaming (in no uncertain terms) what the fuck are you doing. “You just might have to ignore his credit score.” ~ Or: Eddie sabotages Buck's apartment viewings. Buck loses his mind over it.

“You seem mighty important to each other.” Buck swallowed, eyes catching on the rogue strand of hair flopped over Eddie’s forehead from a distance, and said, “Yeah, he is. Christopher, too. Ever since Eddie started at the 118 they’ve both been family to me.” Taylor had nodded, eyes bright. “I can see that. From Eddie too, by the way.” She said the last part gently, like she was trying not to spook a horse. “If that means something to you.” ~ Or: Buck and Eddie go out to the bar after the Nashville firefighter games.
