with great power (all)
small musings on all my Shepards
Two soldiers, one infiltrator, one adept, a vanguard, and a sentinel. Three born on Earth, two from a colony, and one raised in space. Two survived alone, two held off the Blitz, and two earned the nickname Butcher.
Six of them, at the end of all things. Six individuals, six lives, six histories.
Six last stands.
Leah stands alone, staring at the beam in the distance, her spine ramrod straight and steel. This is just another mission, no point convincing herself itâs more important than any other. People fuck up more if they know that they have to be perfect. Piece of cake, is what this is.
Isabella stands with Kaidan on her left, Anderson on her right. They know this is the end, and if there is a tomorrow - they donât know what it looks like. Kaidan squeezes her hand and Anderson gives her a look, like he knew sheâd grow into this. She nods. Time to go.
Yael and Shoshana stand side by side. They clasp their hands together and bow their heads, and the wind carries away their prayers. They entered this world as a team, and theyâll leave this world as a team.
Susan stands beside Liara, with Ashley and Garrus a step behind. They can do this. She can do this. She taps her fist against Ashleyâs, and awkwardly does the same for Garrus, and they all laugh. Liara she simply smiles at, knowing sheâll break if they hug or speak. Liara nods, confident. You can do this.
Olivia stands with Garrus, with her mother in her comms. She canât promise anymore that she always comes back, but she can promise she isnât planning on dying again. Her mother tells her she loves her, and to please duck, and disconnects. She looks up at Garrus and smiles, ready. He bumps his forehead against hers, right behind her.
Four destroy, one controls, and one refuses.
All are saviors.
A girl named hope (Isabella)
small musings on all of my Shepards
She starts to read, in rehab. She always had the skill, never bothered to use it beforehand. But now, sheâs found herself with an extraordinary amount of spare time on her hands, and hell if sheâs going to pick up knitting. Andersonâs been called back to duty, so itâll be a while before she has a console again.
So she reads. Most of itâs dull as untoasted bread (sheâd maim a guard for an extranet connection so she could get something written in this century), but itâs something to do and by the time Anderson comes by with the promised console, sheâs decided that Dickens and Twain are awful and made the excellent decision to devour a decent chunk of the libraryâs African American Literature section (still nothing from this century; sheâs put a complaint into the suggestion box).
Group therapyâs been talking for weeks about finding replacements for drugs, something to fill the time you used to devote to getting high. In her case, thatâs a hell of a lot of time to fill.
Books and the gaming console help, but sheâs fidgety and the Bluewire she swiped from the hospital gift shop canât handle anything more than a basic door override, so she canât even work on her programs and hacks. Arts and crafts is bullshit, no one needs that many things made out of popsicle sticks; her artistic talents are anyway limited to cooking heroin. And biotics are strictly prohibited for reasons beyond her comprehension.
She learns to do nothing. Sheâs meant to be learning skills and hobbies to fill the time, but sheâs headed for the Alliance the day she turns 18 - papers are drawn up and everything - and nothing seems like a better way to fill the in-between months than learning combustion engine repair. Thereâs an art to sitting still and quiet, and she perfects it, because she might as well be good at something.
Akuze sets her veins burning, mouth watering, a primal urge and throb inside of her to get as high as a goddamn kite. Higher, even. She could get it easily enough; her tiny room is in Vancouver now, but sheâs allowed outside without so much as a sign-out and all cities function basically the same. But she knows how to do nothing, and nothing is better than falling, no matter how much she wants the drop. She pulls up the extranet on her omnitool and searches for Octavia Butler, and stays inside.
run girl run
somehow I found myself writing Isabella Shepardâs origin story. 1800ish words.
Rated a strong PG-13 for language and frank discussion of drug abuse. Also contains somewhat graphic descriptions of drug use.
The worldâs fuzzy when she opens her eyes. Too bright, and blurred around the edges, with an insistent invasive beeping somewhere off to the left. If opening her eyes hadnât cost almost all the energy she had, sheâd murder the beep.
ââm I dead?â Her throatâs dry, voice hoarse, and sheâs hit with deja vu. A few hours, days probably, are missing, blacked out. But this, the blur and the brightness and that goddamn beep, is almost familiar. At least itâs warm here, wherever here is, and not raining.
âNo,â a deep voice answers from the foot of the bed.
She closes her eyes and takes her first deep breath, manages not to cough. Antiseptic. Sterile. Hospital. Definitely not dead, then. âFantastic.â
17. Amusement, Kaidan and/or Iz.
Looking back, theyâll think they were nuts for doing this. And maybe they were; the middle of the war, without much sleep, running and gunning from planet to planet without a plan or orders beyond âmake friends, kill Reapers.â
It was a good time to be crazy. Nothing else made much sense.
But right now, theyâre jumping out of a shuttle on Tuchanka to deal with Cerberus, and the most firepower either of them has brought is a sidearm pistol. James and Garrus drop down after them, providing fully-armed backup in case this goes haywire. Theyâre meant to be investigating and shutting down the Cerberus presence on this base, but thereâs a larger point here.
And that point is: James Vega is full of shit when heâs drunk (full of shit sober, too, but less likely to make bets he has no chance of winning).
Kaidan and Shepard bump their fists together in solidarity. Between the two of them, they shouldnât even need a single bullet for this.
Garrus laughs as Vega shifts nervously next to him when the two sentinels rush forward into cover, glowing orange and blue. âHaving regrets, Vega?â He sets up his sniping position and settles in, doubts heâll even be needed.
"Hell no, Scars," James shoots back, full of false confidence. He only half-remembers this dare.
Cerberus troops run in, subtle as ever, and the first group explodes in a bubble of blue and sparks within seconds. Itâs almost raining troopers.
James sighs, now officially resigned to buying the entire ground team dinner next time theyâre on the Citadel. At least itâll be a hell of a fight to watch.

in which Shepard thinks about Anderson and Earth
I've had a bad 48 hours so I wrote sad Isabella fic. Because my brain utterly fails at logic.
The apartmentâs huge.
Huge is probably the understatement of the century (second only to âthe Reapers arenât a threatâ), but when she steps inside and has to lean her head backward to even catch a glimpse of the ceiling, huge is all she comes up with. Neon lights shine through the windows and skycars zoom by and the crowd at Armax cheers, and as she wanders through the first floor looking for the QEC to link up with Anderson, all she can think is what a fucking waste.
