Best friend: Miranda. AND WE'RE PRETENDING I DIDN'T GET HER KILLED ON HORIZON OKAY THAT NEVER HAPPENED.
Sexuality: Straight. She's my only straight Shepard. It's adorable.
Favorite color: Dark red.
Relationship status: very much with Kaidan
Ideal mate: she didn't put a whole lot of thought into this beforehand, but she likes Kaidan.
Turn-ons: Kaidan's voice? I don't know what turns straight allo people on. I'm so stuck on writing the two of them together because I don't understand how her attraction to him even works.
Favorite food: popcorn.
Crushes: Kaidan.Â
Favorite music: Indie hip-hop.
Biggest fear: falling off the wagon
Biggest fantasy: she doesn't allow herself to think too far ahead. But, before she actually did it, she really really very much wanted to shoot Kai Leng in the throat.
Bad habits: well there were those years when she was a drug addict and alcoholic, that was kinda bad.
Biggest regret: I mean she didn't particularly enjoy ODing and landing in the hospital, but it led her to Anderson and the Alliance so.
Best kept secrets: those years in the Reds and all the drug stuff. Anderson did a damn good job of wiping everything from public record and sealing up everything the Alliance had.
Last thought: "Ouch."
Worst romantic experience:Â straight cis allo people, I don't even know.
Biggest insecurity: that Kaidan will leave. And she hates herself for having that insecurity.

who wakes the other one up with kisses: Kaidan. Isabella is the extreme opposite of a morning person, but Kaidan kisses are a good way to wake up.
who cooks for who: Kaidan. Iz can cook, but Kaidan actually enjoys it.
who is the morning person/night person: neither one of them are particularly morning people, but Isabellaâs a night person.
who is the romantic one: Kaidan. Iz is still a little shocked that sheâs even in this relationship (never really thinking sheâd be/want to be in a long-term relationship), so Kaidan tends to take the lead on romantic stuff.
who is the top when it comes to sex: both of them, about equally.
who would lead in ballroom dancing:Â neither. Iz wouldnât be caught dead dancing, and Kaidan never learned.
who is the more cuddly one: Isabella, which surprised her. If theyâre alone, the chances are pretty good that sheâs curled up against him or has her arm around his waist.
who is the one to most likely pick the movie they watch: they alternate, but they have similar tastes.
who is the one who would pay for dates: Kaidan. He insists.
who is the one who would initiate a quicky during classes: Iz. She never really grew out of the impulsive âdare yaâ phase of her youth. Kaidan was nervous about it at first (âShepard, weâre gonna get caught.â âItâs my ship, whatâs anyone gonna do?â), but now heâs on board.
okay but: Susan - asexual lesbian (partnered with Liara, who's asexual and the asari equivalent of "likes women") Olivia - why is gender a thing no go away (partnered with Garrus, who's bi) Yael - grayromantic lesbian, until Thane came along and confused her about everything (partnered with Thane, who's pan; and then Sam, who's canonically gay) Isabella - token straight woman (partnered with Kaidan, who's canonically bi)
I've had a bad 48 hours so I wrote sad Isabella fic. Because my brain utterly fails at logic.
The apartmentâs huge.
Huge is probably the understatement of the century (second only to âthe Reapers arenât a threatâ), but when she steps inside and has to lean her head backward to even catch a glimpse of the ceiling, huge is all she comes up with. Neon lights shine through the windows and skycars zoom by and the crowd at Armax cheers, and as she wanders through the first floor looking for the QEC to link up with Anderson, all she can think is what a fucking waste.
There are thousands of refugees sleeping on chairs and in corners in the docking bays because they have nowhere else to go, and yet here people are debating about what kind of leather seats are the best for convertible skycars. She walked past twelve starving children to get to the rapid transit station by the docks, gave them each a credit chit that would last them a week, and the sushi place has a line out the door and the bakery has a dumpster full of yesterdayâs perfectly good rolls.
The orphanage she grew up in was smaller than this apartment.
And it turns out that Anderson wants to give it to her.
âItâs too much,â she says, and she means it quite literally. Her belongings have always fit into a footlocker with room to spare, her address hasnât been a stationary location since basic. She wouldnât know what to do with this much space. She wouldnât know what to do with any place she could permanently call hers.
âDonât make me beg, Shepard.â
She wants to, but she canât argue with his logic: the longer Iâm on Earth, the less I want to leave. Itâs killing her to be out here on the Citadel, or the Normandy, or even in the middle of a pile of brutes and banshees, while her home becomes less and less recognizable. Sheâs pointedly not looking at the rubble behind Anderson. She grew up in London, too.
She bites her lip and looks out the window at the flashing lights of the noodle place. âDavid,â she uses his first name, like he told her all those years ago in the hospital, and tries to swallow the waver in her voice. âYouâre coming back.â
âBella.â
Heâs the only one allowed to call her Bella, and he rarely does. She bites the inside of her cheek and looks back at the screen. Fifteen years heâs been the sole constant in her life, the longest anyoneâs bothered to stick around, and now heâs trying to offload his possessions like someone who knows they wonât need them anymore.
âOkay,â she finally says, with more conviction than she feels, and forces a smile. Thereâs no version of this conversation that doesnât end with her owning an atrociously large apartment, but she doesnât want to fight with him. Not when she doesnât know when sheâll be able to talk to him again. Or if. âBut the minute you and Kahlee want it backâŚâ
He laughs. âWeâll let you know.â
âPlease stay safe,â she asks him for a promise he canât possibly make.
âYou too, Shepard.â
She waits until Kaidanâs sound asleep next to her, and then carefully slides out of bed. She grabs a blanket from the back of the armchair and wraps it around her shoulders as she walks downstairs. Even with blackout curtains on the upstairs windows, the Strip filters in; she doesnât need lights to make sure she doesnât fall.
The kettle turns off without a sound, water heated to the proper temperature for chamomile, and she carefully carries her mug over to the couch and curls up in the corner. The Stripâs quieter at three in the morning, but still alive with the low murmur of a neighborhood too bright to ever really sleep. She looks upward and squints in the dark at the ceilings, reminded of the cathedrals and churches she found shelter in as a kid when she got caught in the rain and cold. The pews were a lot less comfortable than the couch, but no less welcome.
Few people know what Shepardâs been through. I like to think I come pretty close.
She rests her cheek on her knees and closes her eyes, hoping Anderson has a roof over his head tonight, a real one.
âHey,â Kaidanâs voice is husky with sleep as he pads barefoot down the stairs.
âSorry, I didnât mean to wake you.â She blows softly across her tea before taking a sip.
He shakes his head. âYou didnât. Want some company?â
She nods, and leans into him when he slides his arm around her. Kaidanâs warm and solid and familiar, but she still feels out of place here. The paperworkâs gone through and the apartmentâs officially hers, but sheâs waiting for the police to come and kick her out for squatting. Or for the owners to come home and find her stealing jewelry, or rifling through medicine cabinets, because her lookout spooked and ran.
âYou okay?â He kisses her temple.
âThinking about Earth,â she doesnât answer the question. âAnderson,â she offers, because heâll pry it out of her sooner or later.
Kaidan sighs. âHeâs a tough one.â
She knows that tone, knows the unspoken I want to tell you heâll be fine but youâll yell at me for making promises I have no business making, but accepts it. âSaw him throw his pistol at a guy once. Heâd run out of ammo in the firefight. Hit the guy right on his head, knocked him out cold.â
âI wondered where you learned that trick.â
She smiles, remembering how she knocked out a stray husk last week after emptying her entire stockpile of clips into a banshee. James and Kaidan had both looked at her like sheâd gone completely mad, but the husk had given one last attempt at a groan and then collapsed.
They fall into silence as she finishes her tea, and she feels Kaidan drift off to sleep again with his chin resting on her head.
And I worry sometimes, she forgets: thereâs a whole bunch of people who lose sleep over her getting back home.
âHeâll be okay,â she whispers to the darkness.
And now she has this apartment that the man who became her father - the most important person in her life - has given her, because he doesnât think heâll make it back. And itâs huge, itâs bigger than anything sheâs ever seen. The rooms she slept in as a kid could fit into some of the bathrooms. Thereâs a delivery menu and they used to burn those in the Reds, to keep fires going at night for warmth; thereâs a fireplace here that doesnât even give off any heat. She finds a weekly grocery delivery list, ready to be reactivated with the push of a button, and sets it down and walks away; no one can eat all that food in a week before the next shipment comes.
Before she goes to meet Joker, she calls Kaidan over.
And when she says âthis is too much, I donât want itâ in a way thatâs both angry and wistful, he slides an arm around her and whispers about what this place could be. A space for friends, for parties and gatherings, for friends who need a place to stay. A space for them, where they can be alone and actually have space and a bed and a kitchen and a couch. And, eventually, maybe, a space for a family. He doesnât go into detail on that one, just leaves it there and ends it with a hug because sheâs overwhelmed enough by the apartment. She rests her head on his shoulder.
She still thinks itâs unnecessary, and feels like she doesnât belong (sheâs stolen from places like this before, scored 5000 credits from a bathroom once, ate ramen dinner for a couple weeks on that, real ramen with meat and vegetables), but the hot tub would feel nice.
