Sitting in lecture this past Friday, the subject of Success Metrics and KPIs surfaced and immediately inspired me to share my experience watching a talk by NPR’s Deputy Director Daniel Newman (@creativenewman) at IxDA’s interaction 15 conference.

Success Metrics can be organized by metrics focused on User goals, and Business goals, and often map to each other.

IE: User Success Metric - being able to easily parse and browse content / Business Success Metric - getting users to consume more content.

Additionally we discussed how Market Research and User Research can complement each other.  The biggest challenge I’ve encountered in this sort of complementary relationship is actually finding solid market research to help identify potential users for the screener process.  

I imagine user research can be used to work back into Market Research, and one interesting takeaway was how qualitative research could be used to inform specific survey questions in quantitative research techniques.

UX RESEARCH - GROUP CONTEXT

I’m excited to have more time to focus on honing my UX Research skills, and developing them within the context of a group project.  

As I explored this material last term, I’m hoping I will be able to build on the foundational skills while also allowing for my team mates to begin building their foundational skills so I anticipate the other learning opportunity is how to support others’ learning while deepening my own understanding of the techniques and tools available to UX Researchers.  

Exploring several new research techniques this term as well. Some highlights I’m looking forward to are developing context specific frameworks and participatory design techniques.

PROCESS BOOK WORKFLOW

Here’s a first draft at the flow.  It’s always tricky to keep a group on the same page, so building a common process of collecting assets is key, but the way people create also needs to be considered so this could turn into a mini project.
