My elements site is complete! I’m sooo happy with the final outcome of it, and also that I was able to figure out how to build it. I’m chuffed.

The main styles are pretty much done now, and everything is responsive.
What’s left is some finishing touches and hover effects.
I’ve also moved away from the original hover effect colours, in favour of bold/contrasting colours for each element category. It also helps to add some liveliness to the site.

With the actual functionality of the site fully complete, I’ve now moved on to styling everything, which brings everything together. It’s such a joy to do the styling, with each page refresh it looks more and more like my design!

I’ve commented through the code at certain points. But at this stage, I’ve been able to loop through each element and add it to the periodic table, which is built with CSS Grid.
Figuring out the grid was only the first step.
The next part was being able to display each element’s data when the user either clicks or navigates with the arrow keys.
I was able to get this working as well. At the moment everything is in plain HTML, the next stage will be to add the styling!

ixd301 — Elements Project: Website Development (JS Objects)
With the data completed, I converted it to one long Javascript Object file.
Having the all this data in Javascript makes interacting with it surprisingly easy, and fun!
To see if things are working, I created a quick test to loop through each element, and generate HTML that displays each Element name.

Okay, so this part is probably the most time consuming and annoying part of the entire project so far.
Essentially, I need to gather a whole lot of data for EVERY. SINGLE. ELEMENT.
Luckily there are some open source projects on Github with most of the data filled in. But converting it to a spreadsheet messes up the formatting, and so I had to spend a whole lot of time manually editing cells, amongst other things that are a pain in the arse.
Anyway, it’s done now, and the data looks beautiful. Now it’s time to get to the meat and bones of the project... code.
ixd301 — Elements Project: Final Mockup
Having created the logo and a finalised style guide, I’ve now created the final hi-fi mockup for my elements site!
I’m really happy with the overall aesthetic, and I think it works well with lots of similar data and content-heavy sections.
At this stage, I’m confident to start looking into developing the designs. I may tweak areas of the interface as I go along, but in general, I’m thrilled with the outcome so far.
