why
Why? We all scramble to ask
right when we watched the months roll past
us. We flicker with the fleeting days
as our mornings offer us a new Covid case.
But farther than the rising numbers
and deeper than our lengthening slumbers
we saw more of ourselves than we ever had done
before. The ugly truths now shadowed the sun.
The ones we always knew were there
pushing us down, we’re running out of air.
In the chaos of our thoughts, we incessantly
wonder when we thought we could act so leisurely?
We critically analyze the time we had
and criticize ourselves, forgetting the time we have.
We begin to question those who say they’re here.
Then doubt ourselves and now in fear
we let our demons override our dreams.
Behind closed doors though, who hears the screams?
There’s blood and tears, I don’t want to be here.
Drowning in anger, now I’m frozen in fear.
When did living become an act of defense?
And why do I keep on building the fence?
