In Russian folklore, Vasilisa the Beautiful was the daughter of a merchant; one day after he’d gone off on business, Vasilisa’s mean stepmother and stepsisters made her go ask the witch Baba Yaga for a light after one of her stepsisters put out their only candle. Baba Yaga forced Vasilisa to do her housework before she would help her. The coals Baba Yaga eventually gave her to take home “burned Vasilisa's stepmother and stepsisters to ashes“--and things worked out well for Vasilisa, because later she married the Tsar, and they lived happily ever after.
In Ivan Bilbin’s illustration above, you can see Baba Yaga’s magic chicken-legged hut in the background, and Vasilisa is lighting her way home with the “skull-lantern” full of burning coals that Baba Yaga gave her.
