Why I fight for solidarity | Pia Klemp
Since June 2018 Klemp and nine other crew members of the IUVENTA are under investigation for 'aiding and abetting illegal immigration to Italy' - because they saved the lives. The IUVENTA and its crew were involved in the rescue of over 14,000 people in distress at sea. Today they face up to 20 years in prison.
What lies ahead of the crew is a marathon - not a sprint. The trial is expected to last between 3 and 4 years and the total cost of the trial will be 500,000 €. The iuventa10 are fighting a legal and political fight against the criminalization of solidarity with refugees and migrants.
#Repost @jugendrettet • • • Today our appeal in Rome was rejected. We will not get back our ship, the #iuventa IUVENTA, today. A more detailed explanation of the courts decision is currently pending. Despite the lack of evidence for the allegations against us and the high death rate on the central Mediterranean route, the #iuventa IUVENTA is still missing in the search and rescue zone. This is not just about Sea Rescue. This is concerning the question in which world we want to live in. In a world that rather focusses on the questions, if you own the „right" passport, have the „right" skin color, or the „right" religion? Or do we want to live in a world where we stick to humanitarian principles and put saving lives over political debates. For us as JUGEND RETTET it is clear that an inhumane migration policy, right-wing populism and racism are no options. But it is precisely these positions that we are seeing increasing in strength in Europe's society. That's exactly why our work is still necessary. And that's why we will continue our work. #freeiuventa
