Can't Follow Instructions
Fanprose
The box landed in the middle of the apartment with a heavyย thudย that echoed through the living room. IU stared down at it suspiciously.
The picture printed on the cardboard showed a perfectly staged wooden dining table decorated with candles, flowers, and a bowl of fruit that looked aggressively fake.
Y/n crouched beside the box, already excited. โSee? Easy.โ
IU didnโt move. โThat table looks like it was assembled by professionals with engineering degrees.โ
โItโs literally four legs and a flat surface.โ
โThat sentence is exactly why I donโt trust you.โย
He ignored her and sliced the tape open with his keys. The cardboard flaps sprang apart dramatically. And immediately revealed approximately one thousand pieces of wood. (Not really, but it looks like it)
IU blinked slowly. โWhy are there so many parts?โ
Y/n picked up the instruction booklet. It unfolded once. Twice. Three times. โโฆOkay,โ he admitted. โThatโs excessive.โ
IU folded her arms. โWe shouldโve paid for assembly.โ
โAnd let strangers rob us of this bonding experience?โ
โYes.โ
He laughed and started pulling pieces from the box anyway, laying them across the carpet in messy piles. Wooden boards covered half the living room within minutes.
The apartment already looked chaotic from moving in together two weeks earlier. There were still unopened kitchen boxes near the wall, hoodies draped over chairs, and random cables neither of them claimed ownership of.
Adding furniture parts into the disaster somehow made it look worse.
IU sat cross-legged on the floor with the instructions in her lap. โOkay. We need panel A, screws labeled three, and the short brackets.โ Y/n grabbed a board confidently. โWrong one,โ she said immediately.
He frowned. โYou didnโt even look up.โ
โThe labels are colour-coded.โ
โโฆOh.โ She smirked slightly. That annoyed him more than it should have.
For the first half hour, things went surprisingly smoothly.
IU organised every piece neatly into categories while Y/n handled the actual building. Or attempted to. โCan you hold this?โ he asked.
IU grabbed one side of the table frame while he tried attaching the support beam underneath.
The second she let go, the entire thing collapsed sideways with a violent clatter. Both of them jumped.
Y/n stared at the fallen wood. โThat felt unnecessary.โ
IU looked at him flatly. โYou didnโt screw it in.โ
โI wasย aboutย to screw it in.โ
โYou said hold it, not perform a miracle.โ He snorted a laugh and reached for the screwdriver again.
โโโโโโโโโโโโ
wenty minutes later, the mood shifted completely. Mostly because Y/n had quietly stopped following the instructions.
At first IU didnโt notice. She was sitting cross-legged on the carpet with the booklet spread across her lap, carefully separating screws into little groups while occasionally reading out directions for him.
โOkay,โ she said absently, tracing a finger along the page. โNow attach support beam C to the inner left side before tightening theโโ
A loudย clunkย interrupted her.ย
IU looked up. Y/n was already halfway through attaching an entirely different piece. Her eyes narrowed immediately. โโฆWhat are you doing?โ
Without looking up, he answered, โBuilding the table.โ
โThat is not the next step.โ
โYes it is.โ
โNo, it literally isnโt.โ
โIt felt right.โ
IU stared at him for a long moment. โYouโre not reading the instructions anymore, are you?โ
Y/n finally glanced up with the kind of confidence possessed exclusively by people about to make terrible decisions. โI donโt need them anymore.โ
IU blinked slowly. โExcuse me?โ
โI understand the vision now.โ
โThe vision?โ
โYeah.โ He gestured vaguely at the scattered wood around them. โYou know. The structural narrative.โ
โThe structuralโ what does that even mean?โ
โIt means Iโve evolved beyond the booklet.โ
IU lowered the instructions into her lap very carefully, like she was trying not to start a fight. โYou skipped a step,โ she said.
โNo, I didnโt.โ
โYou definitely did. Like 5 of themโ
โIโm using intuition.โ
โYou cannot freestyle a table.โ
โFurniture is just confidence.โ
IU stared at him in complete disbelief. Then slowly lowered the booklet another inch. โThat is maybe the stupidest thing youโve ever said.โ
โThatโs dramatic.โ
โYou attached the left support backwards.โ
Y/n froze. For the first time in several minutes, he actually looked underneath the table frame. โโฆOkay,โ he admitted cautiously. โMaybe slightly backwards.โ
โSlightly?โ
โItโs barely noticeable.โ
โThe holes are facing the wall.โ
โThat feels cosmetic.โ
IU let out a long, exhausted breath through her nose. Y/n watched her carefully. โWhy are you reacting like I crashed a car?โ
โBecause this would be easier if you had crashed a car. At least then weโd call someone else to fix it.โ
He laughed immediately. She didnโt.
That only made him laugh harder.
IU held her hand out silently. Y/n looked down at it. โWhat?โ
โThe screwdriver.โ
โYou donโt trust me?โ
โI trust you emotionally.โ She wiggled her fingers impatiently. โStructurally? No.โ
โThatโs hurtful.โ
โThatโs accurate.โ
He handed it over while muttering under his breath, โThis is a dictatorship.โ
IU ignored him and crouched beside the table. Y/n watched as she immediately flipped the support beam around, tightened the screws properly, then adjusted another bracket he hadnโt even realised was crooked.
All in under thirty seconds.
He frowned. โโฆYou knew how to do that way too fast.โ
โI read the instructions.โ
โThat sounds fake.โ
IU smirked a little without looking up. โMaybe if you tried literacy, we wouldnโt be in this situation.โ
โWow.โ
โAm I wrong?โ
He opened his mouth. Then closed it again. โโฆThatโs not the point.โ
IU sat back on her heels triumphantly. โThought so.โ
Y/n narrowed his eyes at her. โYouโre enjoying this.โ
โA little.โ
โThatโs evil.โ
โWhatโs evil is pretending you know what youโre doing.โ
โIย doย know what Iโm doing.โ
The table chose that exact moment to wobble violently. The entire frame tilted sideways with a horrible wooden creak that sounded deeply concerning.
Both of them froze. IU looked slowly at the table. Then slowly at him.
Y/n stared back with forced confidence. โโฆIt has character.โ
IU tried not to laugh. Really tried. She pressed her lips together and looked away, shoulders shaking slightly. โThereโs nothing funny happening right now,โ she said weakly.
โThe table almost folded in half.โ
โItโs adjusting.โ
โTo what? Gravity?โ He snorted.ย
That ruined her composure completely. A laugh escaped before she could stop it. She immediately covered it with a cough and looked away. โNo, it doesnโt.โ
Y/n grinned triumphantly. โThere it is.โ
โThere what is?โ
โThe laugh.โ
โI did not laugh.โ
โYou absolutely laughed.โ
โThat was pity.โ
โThatโs even worse.โ
IU rolled her eyes, but there was a smile pulling at the corner of her mouth now. Y/n noticed immediately.
And unfortunately for her, that only encouraged him. He leaned back against the couch smugly. โAdmit it. Youโd miss me if I wasnโt here helping.โ
She looked at the dangerously unstable table. Then back at him. โโฆHonestly? I think Iโd feel safer.โ
โโโโโโโโโโโโ
Another hour passed. The living room became progressively more disastrous. Screws rolled under the couch. The instruction booklet had somehow torn in the middle. Y/n had lost the Allen wrench twice. And IU was beginning to look personally offended by the existence of furniture.
โThere are missing screws,โ she announced suddenly.
Y/n looked up from tightening one of the legs. โNo there arenโt.โ
โThere should be sixteen left.โ
โThereย areย sixteen left.โ
โThere are eleven.โ
He counted them. โโฆThere are eleven.โ
IU closed her eyes slowly. โYou lost them.โ
โI didnโt lose them.โ
โYou absolutely lost them.โ
โHow do you lose screws in a one-bedroom apartment?โ
She pointed around the room. โLook at this place.โ
He looked around. And he signed and muttered โFair.โ
Wood panels leaned against the couch. Tiny hardware pieces littered the carpet. There was cardboard everywhere. One table leg was somehow underneath the television stand.
Y/n rubbed his forehead. โOkay. Nobody panic.โ
โIโm already panicking.โ
โDonโt do that.โ
โYou told me this would take an hour.โ
โItโs only been,โ He checked his phone. โโฆthree and a half.โ
IU looked genuinely betrayed. โWe couldโve bought a finished table.โ
โAnd miss this quality time?โ
โThere is nothing quality about this.โ Y/n laughed. IU did not. Which made him laugh harder. โOh my god,โ she muttered. โYou think this is funny.โ
โItโs a little funny.โ
โYou used a kitchen knife instead of the proper tool earlier.โ
โBecause Iโm adaptable.โ
โYouโre a safety hazard.โ
He leaned back against the couch grinning while she aggressively searched through the hardware bags again.
Then suddenly.
โโฆWait.โ
Y/n looked over. โWhat?โ
IU froze. Very slowly, she reached into the pocket of her oversized hoodie. And pulled out five missing screws. Y/n stared.ย
IU stared at the screws in horror. Then at him. โโฆDonโt.โ
He immediately started laughing hard. Like full-body, canโt-breathe laughing.
IU threw a cushion at him. โI said donโt!โ
โYou blamed me for like half an hour!โ
โI know!โ
โYou called me irresponsible!โ
โYouย areย irresponsible!โ
โYou hid the evidence in your own pocket!โ
She covered her face with both hands while he continued laughing on the floor beside the half-finished table.
Eventually her embarrassment cracked too. A laugh escaped her. Then another. Until both of them were sitting in the middle of the messy apartment laughing so hard neither could breathe properly.
The irritation dissolved almost instantly. Y/n looked over at her, smiling helplessly. โYou know weโre never living this down.โ
IU groaned. โPlease donโt tell people.โ
โOh, Iโm absolutely telling people.โ
โI hate you.โ
โNo you donโt.โ
โโฆI hate that youโre right.โ
He grinned triumphantly before pushing himself back upright. โOkay,โ he said. โFinal step.โ
Together, they flipped the table upright. And somehow, miraculously, It actually looked like a table.
A slightly uneven table. A somewhat questionable table. But still. A table.
Both of them stared at it for a long moment like theyโd just survived a war. Y/n placed both hands on his hips proudly. โSee? Perfect craftsmanship.โ
IU walked around it slowly, eyeing the wobble in one leg. โItโs leaning.โ
โItโs rustic.โ
โItโs one argument away from collapsing.โ
โNegative attitude.โ
She pressed both palms against the surface carefully. The table creaked. Y/n immediately looked nervous. โThat sound felt personal.โ
IU bit back a smile. Then she looked up at him innocently and said, โYou want to test the stability?โ
Y/n blinked. Slowly. โโฆDo you mean that?โ
IU stared at him for two full seconds before realization hit. Her entire face turned red instantly. โOh my god,โ she groaned, grabbing the nearest cushion again while Y/n doubled over laughing again.
โYou said it like that on purpose,โ he accused between laughs.
โI DID NOT.โ
โYou absolutely did.โ
IU smacked him with the cushion repeatedly while he barely defended himself, laughing harder every second.
Behind them, the table gave one ominous creak. Then one of the legs snapped sideways. The entire table collapsed to the floor.
Both of them froze.
IU looked at the wreckage. Then at Y/n. โโฆSo,โ she said carefully. โStable enough?โ
That sent him laughing all over again.
โCall someone to set it up. I'm not going through this againโ She said while walking to the bedroom.
โYes Maโamโ He said as he pulled out phone.
