Youāre out picking wildflowers by the edge of the forest, an act that you suddenly have a hankering for. Maybe itās to help brighten up your new home when itās probably older than your great grandparents. Itās all stone and wood, with a red terracotta roof, a cottage situated by its lonesome. Neighbors are scarce around your house, and you like it that way when the only companion you could ever want or need is your border collie, Nellie.
Nellie is just a puppy, barely seven months old and yet sheās overly protective of you. She doesnāt want you out of her sight, her mismatched eyes always following your every move. Itās sweet, albeit creepy at times, as if she has a human soul trapped inside her fluffy body.
Just like always, she follows you around as if youāre the one sheās walking, not the other way around.
āNell, what do you think of this?ā You pick a particularly bright yellow flower, crouched down on the grassy ground as you let her give it a sniff. āDo you approve?ā
She huffs, tail wagging as she quietly barks. She approves of your choice it seems.
āGood, I think this one matches the new couch. Fuck, when will the rest of my shit get here, Iām going insane without TV and internet.ā You talk to yourself as you admire the flower in between your fingers. Nellie listens to you, head tilted as if sheās trying to comprehend your words. āIām talking to a flower and my dog, Iām definitely going insane.ā Sighing, you huff, giving Nellie a good scratch behind her ear. āAt least youāre a good listener, hm?ā
Chuckling, your eyes catch sight of a purple flower sticking out in between large roots of a gigantic tree. āHuh, Iāve never noticed that tree here before.ā
If you recall your scouting days, itās an old oak tree that rises up into the heavens, leaves lush and green as it dances in the wind. You look up, watching the dappled sunlight spill in between the leaves.
Nellie barks at something, but sheās always barking at something ever since you moved here. Itās probably a squirrel or a bird passing by as you stand up, eyes honed in on the shiny purple flower.
Your knees creak in protest as you kneel back down in front of it. You smile, basket almost complete with all the colours of the rainbow, all except for a purple one.
Reaching for it, you start to pull, but itās a stubborn one, roots deeply underneath the soil. For a small flower itās strong. So you keep pulling and tugging, both hands now completely holding it. You shouldāve brought scissors.
Nellie barks louder now, and as you look over your shoulder, you see her barking right at you.
āNellie, whatās wrong?ā You pull at the base of the stem, fingers digging into the soil as the border collie continues to bark. Youāre about to give up, but the flower tugs right back at you. āWhaā!ā
The soil rises up towards your hands, or youāre slowly pulled down below, engulfing your arms as you stare at it in horror. Nellie bites at your coat, trying to pull you away.
āShit!ā Before you know it, you fall into the soil and in-between the roots, falling into the darkness as Nellieās barks grow muffled and quieter.
You hit the ground with a soft thud, heaving as you stare at a starry sky. You know for a fact that it was just the middle of the day. āWhat the fuck?ā
āYouāre intruding in my abode and you dare to curse in my presence?ā A deep voice echoes behind you, like the sound of rolling rocks or perhaps a raging river.
Youāre afraid to look as you continue to gaze up at the dream-like sky.
āFantastic, you donāt talk.ā
āIāI talk.ā You gulp down your nerves, fingers stretching beside you as you stay in place.
āYouāre afraid then.ā The voice sounds clearer and nearer now. āHow did you get here?ā
āI picked a flower.ā The velvet feel of the stem garners your attention as you find it in your hand. āUm, here.ā Lifting up your hand, you bring it backwards where the voice is coming from, all the while never leaving or even looking up towards the source. āSorry, Mister Fae.ā
A moment passes, hearing his breathing stagger in his throat as your arm starts to get tired. āMister Fae?ā
āI grew up with stories of youā I mean your peopleā your kind. Iām overstepping, Iām sorry.ā
He hums, a deep rumble in his chest that you could feel as he finally plucks the flower daintily from your hand.
You hear his heartbeat, youāre sure itās a heartbeat at least when everything around you is silent, almost frozen in time. Biting your lip, your curiosity begs to be satiated. So with a deep breath, you turn around to take a little peek. No harm done, right?
His deep purple eyes meets with yours immediately, and you feel him, *really feel him, heart syncing with yours, every breath you take, he exhales, every rising gooseflesh, he feels, every thought he has, you hear.
āWhat the fuck?ā The being says in his head. āYou idiot. Weāre bound now.ā
āFuck?ā You stagger, falling backwards as you find yourself completely toppled over on the ground, staring up at the underside of a gigantic mushroom that you were on the whole time. āWhat do you mean weāre bound? And you can curse?ā
āGet out.ā He says, going around the mushroom, saying the words without moving his lips.
Heās handsome, hauntingly so. Chiseled jawline, eyes that stare right at you as if he could see right into your soul. And his lips, that despite the sneer, you could see a faint ghost of a smile curling in the corner. Youāre flustered and slightly terrified.
His cloak is made of stars, and purple flowers, the same one you picked, drags behind him, covering his whole body, save for his arms as it phases through the cloak. It looks as if space and time weaved it around him, or made it with him in mind. Vines curl over his head, slithering above his bare head, a crown made just for him.
āYou are not welcome here.ā The being utters, lips barely moving as his jaw sets, hands curling into fists.
āAre you sure about that, Aaron?ā You blink, he blinks, you both stare at each other dumbfoundedly. āWait, your name is Aaron? Arenāt you like, a million years old?ā
āA thousand.ā He corrects. āWhat is wrong with you?ā
āCanāt you, I donāt know, see? Just like I am?ā
āStopā!ā He groans, cheeks aflame that you could feel on your own. āStop looking inside my head!ā
āI canāt help it!ā Defending yourself, youāre utterly confused. āWait, you canāt look into mine?ā
He huffs, eyes closing as he pinches the bridge of his nose. People always said that sometimes youāre too much, and this proves it when the thousand year old fae is frustrated and annoyed by you. Even though you feel something deeply rooted inside him, something that is blooming, just like the gentle warmth crawling inside your chest.
āYou okay?ā Sitting up, you sit cross legged, looking up at him with concern. āShit, did I accidentally bring some sort of modern illness to you? Like a time traveler going back to medieval times.ā
āWhat are you on about?ā Aaron opens his eyes, arms crossing over his chest as he raises a brow. āPlease leave.ā
āAw, you said please, thatās nice, oh, and progress!ā Lifting up your fist, you wait for him to bump it with his. āCome on, gimme some, ancient man!ā
Aaron reaches for you, instead of bumping his fist with yours, he takes your fist whole, long fingers curling around your hand as he pulls you up in one swift movement.
Youāre chest to chest with him, feeling the coldness of his skin, watching as the stars pass by within his eyes that briefly flicker into russet eyes, before turning purple once again.
āHello.ā You say softly and kindly as he winces, almost in pain. But you feel that itās the opposite, your greeting, no, presence makes him feel some type of way that it feels far too much for him. āMy name isā¦wait, I canāt do that or else Iāll be stuck here with you forever.ā
āItās too late for that when we are bound.ā
āYou keep saying that as if I know what it means.ā
āI think you humans call it āsoulmates.āā The powerful being turns his head away for a moment, flustered, before looking at you with tenderness that passes by as he shakes it away.
āHoly shit, thatās so cool!ā Itās the last thing he thought you would answer. āYou mean I donāt have to be on dating apps anymore? And I get to date a hot fae? Score!ā
āWait, what?ā He stifles a chuckle. āThere is something inherently wrong with you. Youāre peculiar.ā
āAnd yet weāre soulmates so there is something wrong with you too.ā Giggling, you pat his solid chest with every word. āSo, does this mean Iām stuck here forever? Because I have a dogāā you gasp, grinning brightly at him. āCan I bring her here with us?! Oh, itāll be so fun!ā
Anyone would be annoyed, and yet he isnāt, he keeps you in place, hands sliding down your hands over to your wrist. His thumb caresses your pulse as a smile slowly makes its way to his face whilst you ramble on about installing internet inside his abode.
āOh, do you even have electricity hereāā
āBe gone, human.ā He fights everything in him to say those words.
āBut we just met.ā Pouting, you flutter your lashes at him. āI get it though, youāre busy. When can I see you again?ā
āYou want to see me again?ā Shock is evident in his eyes that seems to reflect the universe.
āDuh.ā You simply shrug with a shrug. āIāll make you my famous lemon cookies. Theyāre gluten free!ā
āI have no idea what that is, butā¦ā Aaron deeply inhales you in, as if memorizing your soul with a sniff. ā... Iāll call for you.ā
āYay! Like on the phone orāā He lets you go reluctantly as you fall backwards once again, the last thing you see is him smiling at you genuinely.
You land back in the same place, with Nellie licking at your face, whining worriedly. āIām okay, girl.ā Chuckling, you sit up and hug her as she curls around you, all the while you let out a yawn.
Turning towards the flower, you see it remain in place, blooming fully as the sun shines upon it.
Mustāve been a dream.
You go back home, leaving the purple flower be as you lug around your flower basket, with Nellie following closely behind you.
āI suddenly want some lemon cookies.ā You open the front door with a creak, toeing off your boots as you place the basket down. āWhat do you think, girl?ā
āI would like some.ā Aaron stands in the middle of the living room, looking just the same as you let out an ear piercing screech.
