As a Nigerian, we have been raised and brainwashed on the concept of this picture. That any woman or child who doesn’t speak or express their views freely are known to be a well mannered or a well-behaved being. Did Mark Zuckerberg read Seth Godin in high school? When I was in marketing, I was all-in on Godin's ideas and "relationship marketing." Note the tag line on Permission Marketing: "Turning strangers into friends and friends into customers." This book was published in 1999. Survival Is Not Enough, with a forward by Charles Darwin, was published in 2002, when businesses were rethinking themselves in the post 9/11 world. On the inside book cover, it says: "All the confusion and chais and change and turmoil in our working lives have finally tipped the balance. We now need a new way of doing business... Most of us view change as a threat, and survival as the goal. Yet we work too hard to consider just getting by as our primary goal. In Survival Is Not Enough, Godin provides a groundbreaking new way to organize companies to thrive during times of change... Darwin was right. Evolution is a fundamental force of nature, and Godin demonstrates how this force can be unleashed in any organization. The first step is to eliminate the anti-change reflex that's genetically coded into all in us." I read Godin's books more than 20 years ago when I was program director for the Arizona Smokers Helpline and a consultant for the CDC. The Helpline was "surviving" on state tobacco tax funds, but the Legislature was continuously trying to sweep the money. I knew "survival was not enough" for the helpline to remain strong. Godin's book prompted me to start writing grants to get other funding sources. I think these books have something to say to all of us about marketing through social media and about what life could be after COVID-19. Survival is not enough.
