Ā Here some advice from a graduating college senior. These are just some things that Iāve learned throughout my years in school and thought would be helpful to others.
Research the course and the professors before taking them. Thereās a website called RateMyProfessor that students use to rate their professors. Use this has a guide.
Try to make friends around campus and ask for suggestions about courses and professors from those who have been in school for a while. Not only do you get heads up, you gain friends. A win win situation.
Dress comfortably, wear breathable clothes and bring a sweater in case the classroom has an AC. It is always good to be prepared.
Sturdy backpack and thick straps preferably. I switch between a Herschel Co (it has thick straps and I use it on days where I carry a lot) orĀ Fjallraven Kanken (itās small, cute and for the carrying the necessities).
Communicate with your professor if you are having trouble with something. Ā Anything. I really stress this, not only does it look good to the professor, it always allows you have an easier time talking with them about anything. Also will make them much more likely to remember you in a positive light
There will be times you might think about giving up. Itās going to be hard and it has happened to me. But you can overcome it. Trust me, I did and you will to. Having a positive outlook and seeing the end goal as being rewarding are key to getting over any slump.
Eat and stay hydrated. Ā Bring a water bottle and snack to class. For me itās a 1.5 liter bottle and āusuallyā healthy snacks like fruits.
Go to class for about a week or so to see if you really use the textbook.Ā Unless itās a lab book which will be used. Check to see if your school library has it on reserve and scan it. Rent if you can or buy used instead.
Check your student email daily. If you can get it set up on your phone. Locate your school IT for help if needed.Ā
READĀ the required chapters and summarize briefly. Especially before class. Come up with questions for things not understand and ask questions in class. It will be useful, especially on exams with essays. You can work any information you remember into your response.
[Disclaimer: This is based off my experience in a U.S. college. Each school operates differently so this will not be as 100% accurate proof. This post is intended to give advice concerning any big potential circumstances one might run into and what to do. It is by no mean a foolproof guide to college life and getting advice from multiple sources is important. Hope this help some people :D)
