It took Peter far, far too long to pick which suit he wanted to wear. He had.. what, five of them now? May was working on ideas for a special drawer or compartment somewhere in his room where he could keep them all hidden-- which was definitely a practical idea, but he had a feeling she was enjoying the brainstorming process more than he was.Ā
Anyway, he didnāt need to worry about that right now. Tonight was the 4th of July, and that meant fireworks with Michelle. After finally deciding on a suit ( his stealth one-- because it really was easier to sneak around in, and a small part of him knew that she would have some comment about how ironic it would be if wore blue and red tonight ) he said goodbye to May and left his traditional way-- out his bedroom window.
He swung up to the roof of his apartment building and perched on the edge for a second to send Michelle a text that he was on the way to their meeting point. He didnāt have a problem with texting and swinging. But everyone else did. So he was trying to break the habit-- it was a slow process, but after he sent the text he tucked his phone away with a proud smile before leaping off and away. He was trying, at least.
After a short trip through the city Peter made it to where she would be waiting. He landed on the nearest streetlight to her and took a seat, legs swinging back and forth.Ā āPsst!ā He wasnāt quiet as he tried to get her attention.Ā āUp here!ā

mysterioās voice echoes in his head after the video ends and peter blinks, pulse racing. everything seems to be moving in slow motion and thereās a crowd forming on the street and his heart is pounding and oh my god oh my god oh my god oh myā
āthere he is!ā
āspider-man!ā
ātraitor!ā
āmurderer!ā
his palms are sweaty and his chest hurts and itās getting really hard to breathe in the mask and heās almost positive he can hear mjās voice in the crowd calling out to him, but heās not one hundred percent positive and the screaming citizens drown her out and -Ā a sharp intake of breath - before peter can divert one ounce of brainpower to thinking of his next move, heās launching himself away from the chaosā away from the crowd, the yelling, the noise.
the crowd doesnāt follow, but of course the news has spread already ( like a virusā a killer, ravenous virus ).Ā technology is out to get him it seems.
peter hears more shouting on the street below and holds his breath in preparation as he swings, but he flinches at the continued barrage of verbal attacks.
āhey itās spider-man!ā
āwhereās he running to?ā
ācoward!ā
āliar!ā
āmenace!ā
finally reaching the roof of a seemingly decrepit, old apartment building, his journey ends. he stops running.Ā padded feet hit concrete roof and peter doesnāt bother trying for a graceful landing. he tries to slow his descent but thatās itā just lets himself go limp, he deserves it.Ā he failed.
knees buckle and he crashes into a large rusting air duct, the metal clanging loudly, probably alerting nearby civilians of his arrival.Ā peter stops to take a breath, head throbbing as he lies in a broken tangle of limbs, staring up at the sky, and sure enoughā
āyou canāt hide forever up there, peter parker!ā
the voice is unfamiliar but the sheer malice with which his name is said sends a shot of sourness deep into the pit of his stomach.Ā a few others have joined the lone harasser, but peterās too tired to focus on what they have to say. his breathing is barely beginning to even out but he decides ( now minutely more aware of his situation ) to wait it out. no oneās going to come up after him. he hopes.
letting his mind wander as the din of the street fades away, his sobs as silent as the city preparing for night, he remains there - hiding.Ā for hours.Ā heās only concretely aware of the passage of time when his vibrating cell phone finally stops vibrating.Ā
waitā
blinking away the moisture in his eyes, he fumbles for the device, hidden in a discreet pocket on his suit. retrieving it, the screen lights up and he tugs his mask away to see better ( even though he knows his visibility in the suit is near perfect ). it just feels appropriate.
not like he needs it anymore, right?
shaking his head in a feeble attempt to organize his thoughts, peter stares at the lock screenā
[30 MISSED CALLS]
15 from may.
10 from happy.
5 from mj.
thereās a handful of texts from ned and more from happy but he ignores them all, choosing instead to fling the device across the rooftop- resigned to his fate.
it hits the brick wall directly across from him and the sound that occurs as a result is much louder than he expected, almost as if it were a footā stepping on a metal rung.
peterās brain is processing at a much slower rate than heād have hoped, despite the adrenaline still coursing through his system and the sight of a hand reaching over the wall on the far side of the roof sends him cowering into a corner.Ā no no no no!
somebodyās found him.
he scrambles to hide but thereās nowhere.Ā heās exposed.
theyāre comingā closer- but he canāt move- heās frozen in place. peter squeezes his eyes shut, curls in on himself as footsteps get closer.Ā his spidey senses are going absolutely ape shit.
better start begging for your life now, parker. a voice thatās not his own says to him internally, and he acquiesces,Ā āi- iām sorry! iām sorry- iām sorryā please donāt hurt me- i didnāt do it i swear! i didnāt do it! iām sorry! iā-ā
Holy shit that had been a long day. One of the longest days ever, he guessed. Peter said that a lot, though. Rough days had a knack for being super long. And Peter had a lot of rough days.
After talking to Amadeus, Peter made sure to text May. She never ended up answering, which meant she was either asleep or on another late shift, but he had told her before that he might not make it home tonight. Even communicating when youāre an Avenger was exhausting. Half the time heād forgot his phone existed and the other half heād be too deep in the next mess to be able to answer. The amount of times he had gotten back from a day full of Spidering around only to see that Ned had blown up his phone with freaked out texts-- in all caps-- was starting to get ridiculous. But it just meant that he cared. People knew about his second life and they worried about him. Things could be worse.
This fight was different. Peter had been to space before, so it wasnāt that they all had a giant get together on the moon. That wasnāt getting to him. But that big blast at the end-- it scared the hell out of him. It left him walking through the halls of the Compound in a haze, mind blank but also stuck. His mind kept going over the last big battle with Thanos, over and over and over again. He could hear the explosions as clear as if he were still there. It made him want to hide, throw his arms over his head and duck and cover.
Handling the mutants forced him to concentrate but once that was over it was like his feet were moving without him. He was tired, shaking, worn down and trying to figure out why the heck he couldnāt just focus. On his way home from the compound he texted MJ but before he made it up the last flight of stairs to his apartment he could barely remember what he said to her. Something about going to the moon and wanting to sleep for twenty years. Also something about not wanting to be alone. It was a blur.
Peter got out his keys. Opened the door. Dropped his bag by the couch. Made it to his room. Dug around for some clean clothes. Then stumbled into the bathroom after he picked out an outfit that most likely didnāt match.
He could have been in the shower for five minutes or five hours-- he really wouldnāt have known the difference. His eyes barely stayed open the entire time he was in there. The hot water practically burned his skin off but he couldnāt get warm. It was like his bones had turned to ice, freezing him from the inside out.
Some time later he got out, dried himself off, put on whatever clothes he had brought with him and then exited the bathroom with his hair still dripping wet-- dark soppy curls landing over his eyes. But he couldnāt care less.
Ugh, why did he pick a t-shirt to wear? Peter was regretting his clothing choices as he turned into his room, rubbing his exposed arms with chattering teeth and then he saw his light was on--- and Michelle was sitting on his bed. He stopped dead in his tracks, confusion painting over the bags under his eyes.Ā āHi.ā His voice was raspy so he cleared his throat.Ā āAre you real.. or am I.. hallucinating now?ā
