Three days before the end of the Battle of the Stepstones, a dark dragon was spotted among the sea. It kept it's distance, every time a scout was sent it fled, the only thing anyone could speak of was it's wings. How they seemed to glow under the sun with colors unlike any other, light seemed through the webbing like it would stained glass.
The first day it was spotted, distant and silent. Daemon sought it out and it fled.
The second day it came closer, passing over the Stepstone battlefield slowly and without fear. When Ser Laenor sought it out it fled.
That night a battle raged, Seasmoke circled the skies but even he did not see the dragon coming. No one did. Fire fell from the sky without warning, scorching the sand and stone, burning the archers before they could run. The beast flew past Seasmoke like an arrow, only then by the flickering light did he see there was a rider. It disseapeared as quick as it arrived.
By morning all were exhausted, even with the strange dragons help they lost. The men had scurried back inside their caves like rats, saving themselves from any more destruction. Only for a while.
As the men met tensions ran high. Moral low, numbers running thin, no man saw purpose in this war anymore. The king sat comfortably with no acknowledgement of their efforts so why should they fight? Why should more men die?
Daemon lashed out, beating a poor messenger, when he was finally pulled away a man yelled. "The glass shadow is back!" The name they had started calling it. Daemon had refused it, insisting it was nothing but a wild dragon wanting to feed on the dead, but when a rider was discovered the name stuck.
All eyes turned to the sky, the beast hid no longer. It flew across the men, low and fast, the bronze crest on the chest of its saddle glistening as it passed. Still, no noise came from it. Caraxes screeched from the distance and yet only a quiet clickly could be heard from the unknown dragon.
It landed on a distant shore, horns splitting off, a spike between its eyes. Dark scales paling near its spines and tail, wings even more colorful so close under the sun. It sat there, waiting.
Daemon took off to his blood wyrm without another word, angry and vicious. Yet when Caraxes landed on the shore there was no battle, distant army men reported the red dragon seemed nearly wistful. Calling to the smaller one as Daemon and the rider spoke, saddened when he was given no answer.
When the Rogue prince returned Lord Corlys met with him in private, demaned to know the identity of the rider. Daemon only stated she would side with them, whoever she was. She did not leave her dragons side, all men were permitted from nearing her. But Caraxes and this unnamed dragon seemed to groom another. Caraxes was seen cautiously rubbing his head to the smaller beast, inspecting it like a dog might a cat, even resting with it. Laying together in the sand under the warm sun as if there was no war at all.
When night came, the last night, men left for the final battle seeing the two dragons still sleeping on the shore. But when the battle sparked and Seasmoke made himself known, so did the strange dragon. Burning through men as if she had been with them when they planned it. By morning there was nothing but ash.
Lord Corlys and his son Ser Laenor wouldn't find out who this rider was until well after the rouge prince returned to Kings Landing. Lady Lysera Targaryen, prince Daemon's own daughter from his late wife. A girl he had abandoned and largely ignored, until she forced his attention to her.
