Time to talk fanfic for a moment. (Specifically I’ll Take Her Place, since that’s my main focus right now.)
So until today I didn’t have a good motive for Lotor past his obvious desire to win Allura. I knew I needed something more than that - Lotor’s too complex for such a simple plot. And while I’m not going to say what this motive is (because spoiler?), I’m looking back at previous chapters and realize I somewhere set it up perfectly for what I’ve decided is his goal.
Sometimes I do plan these things. I hint at what’s to come in the future. And sometimes I just accidentally write a plot point and only realize later how important that detail was.
And that’s why I’ve stopped planning out every little detail of every chapter ahead of time. That in-depth planning kills writing for me. It’s much more of an adventure if I’m discovering things as I’m writing them. That’s not to say I don’t have an idea of how I want it to end (because I’ve had that in mind from the start) or that I don’t have things that I want to happen along the way (those things are what made me really want to write it).
