Etching - Intaglio
I was in the etching workshop and I and I made a start on my first Intaglio print we were shown how to prepare the copper plate and also how to put a wax coat on to prevent acid erosion later on in the process. I then chose to etch in a design that I had previously drawn in my sketchbook however I did not feel that it was appropriate for screen print, so I saved the concept for this process. The design is quite linear and lends itself to etching. I found the process reasonably straight forward however, it was completely new to me. One thing that was really noticeable was how fine the line was when etching the level of detail that I could achieve through this process was incredible. Unfortunately I was not able to actually use my plate to print as the technician was ill and we needed supervision, however I was able to use the acid bath and clean the plate so it is ready for printing. I am pleased with what I have done, however I really hope that when we learn how to use aquatint that a new level of depth will be added as at the moment it lacks emotion and meaning.
