wait, why is steven not knowing how money works ableist? i don't mean this like a troll ask, i'm genuinely curious.
Because the joke is “Isn’t it funny that this 17/18 year old person doesn’t know basic economic math?” The humor is derived from the idea that everyone should understand how money works by Steven’s age and the idea that anyone doesn’t is ridiculous to the point it’s comical.
Edit for further explanation: Basically there are people out there who struggle hard with Math particularly. People who can’t budget and can’t calculate in their head due to learning disabilities. The issue isn’t the idea of Steven not being able to do math (that’s not canon but aside from that). If you want to headcanon Steven being unable to understand money and that leading to comedic things then that’s actually fine. But the humor of it so far has been totally dependent on how comical it is that Steven doesn’t have a basic skill. The entire joke is “Ha ha Steven was never taught math isn’t it funny how dumb he is?”
