to take a fairly obscure example of the phenomenon because i don't want people's affections getting in the way, i think Garion of the Belgariad has pretty good reason to say "why me" all the time, even though K & I made fun of him for it - it's rough for an actual person to find out that, even though you thought you were an unassuming farmboy, you're actually the Hero of Destiny and a really cool wizard.
the problem is that being a really cool wizard is cool, even if it comes bundled with orcs (or whatever, he didn't call 'em orcs but that was what they were) chasing you and being in peril of your life all the time. especially if the rest of the world doesn't feel particularly real, in that it's more storybook than lived experience, it comes off as pathetic rather than a reasonable complaint.
I have fics and AUs of varying kinds that address the character arcs and this one is honestly just kind of a character exercise
It's also a lot more tongue in cheek than I'm making it sound, like... e.g. in the process of compartmentalising his current self from his future self and being unwilling to confront what he grows up into, Thomas tries to steal his own boyfriend. Etc.
