Construction of the International Space Station (ISS) began in late 1998. After two years, the first crews arrived, but the station has never stopped growing, incorporating new modules and tools. Most modules are cylindrical in shape, with openings to join each other and create a pressurized space to live. Inside these cylinders, the walls are covered with hooks and ropes so that the astronauts can float by. The main axis of the ISS is 100 meters long. At each end there is a set of solar panels that are about 80 meters long and supply power to the station. The total wingspan is like a soccer field orbiting Earth. The ISS moves at a speed of almost 28,000 km / h circling our planet. That means one lap every 90 minutes - it's like you can see 16 sunsets / sunsets every day. The International Space Station is 400 kilometers above the Earth's surface. Missions to carry supplies and materials are very expensive, so you have to make the most of the resources available on board. There is no oxygen in space, but this element is essential for living. Instead of taking it in tanks (it would take a lot of it and it would be spent quickly), residual liquids such as urine are used: the oxygen and hydrogen that form it are separated by an electrolysis process. Astronaut urine is also treated to turn it into drinking water.
