This isn't enough to take Dean away 😁
Just wanted to pop in and give you some positivity. You are an amazing artist and I always enjoy seeing your art ^-^. Don't give up *internet hug*
Aziz Ansari
This story is making me sick because it is exactly the reason I'm so worried about dates or even casual hang outs (between friends, I always thought) with men. He never understands my signals (for Grace, it was to stop reaching for him, to pull away, to mumble rather than speak clearly and enthusiastically)--signals that in any non-sexual case, would (or should) be seen as clear signs of a lack of consent.
I'll illustrate in brief with a huge red flag I got from a guy who was sexually interested in me and couldn't take no for an answer--over a piece of CAKE, not even sex, and thank God I was never alone with him. Work party, everyone brings a dish: normal affair, right? I didn't make it to the party on time, and he offered to get me a piece of his *so delicious* cake that he brought. I refused his offer. He got it for me anyway. And when he said that he had, I refused him again and he was insulted. Because I wouldn't take this precious gift he was offering me. Because he felt entitled to give me things, and my option to say no was only an illusion.
To be completely fair to men, this one guy is a bit of an outlier in my experience. But only a bit. And it's not just men, either: our culture is structured so that *anyone* who says no is made to feel uncomfortable at best, or compelled to go against their wishes at worst. It's worse for women. It's worse for POC. And it needs to stop.
