Things you might not know until you actually visit/live on Nantucket.
1. There are a lot of dirt/sand roads
2. Google maps makes you think something is a real road...when it's really barely passable gravel/sand
3. You can't go 55. Â The highest posted speed limit is 45.
4. fresh baked chocolate chip muffins do not exist. Â Get a hankering for all things cranberry.
5. Not EVERYTHING costs 20-30% more than the mainland...but most things do.
6. Biking is the way to travel around the island. ESPECIALLY on the busier tourist days/weekends. There's a reason Nantucket was rated one of the healthiest cities in the US.Â
7. The phone book is often more useful than Google for finding out what's available on-island. Â Businesses that cater to year rounders don't need websites. Â
8. Â The amount of green/undeveloped space is unbelievable. Â Several organizations are doing an amazing job of conserving beautiful fields and ponds. Â I'm always surprised when we drive in certain areas and it looks like the Serengeti. Â
9. Â With no chain stores/restaurants there are no Munchkins. But I did buy some "whale eyes". Â
10. Heavy Portuguese influence. Asked around and many natives couldn't explain why Linguica is on every menu and the bakeries all feauture Portuguese bread. Â Finally learned about Cape Verdeans arriving in Nantucket as cranberry harvesters in the early 20th century.Â
11. Â You can get lost. Often. Â The roads don't make any sense.
12. There are no "For Sale" signs in front of homes. Â Homes are for sale, but you have to find the listings through realtors. Â I'm guessing that's because they don't want looky-loos to just walk up to houses and ring the bell. Â
