āŗ Isla's curse is based on the German fairytale of Undine. Her ability places her in a trance state, allowing her to open a pore of water beneath the victim. Since Undine is a water spirit, Isla essentially becomes the water herself. However, it's extremely difficult to control.
It originally manifested when she as a child when she and her sibling were being attacked by a stranger. The stranger drowned. Due to her ability being easily activated when her emotions are high, Isla tries to control her emotions to the best of her ability and placing as much distance as possible between the ones she loves. At one point, she nearly drowned her sibling and Jude (pre-relationship) by accident.
The only way to wake Isla from her trance is by physical means, such as, pinching and/or even hitting her. On the day she nearly killed Jude, Harrison had to take extreme measures to wake her up while Ellis struggled against the water that was pulling Jude into his watery grave.
Over time, she does learn how to manage her ability better and much of this has to do with learning to accept her cursed self.
Since she has the habit of clenching her fists when she's lost in her trances, Jude has a custom wedding band designed where a briar thorn protrudes from the side of the gemstone. Before Isla ever uses her ability, she turns her ring palmar side, that way the thorn pricks hers when she clenches her fist and awakens her.
āŗ She is fated to die mourning the loss of her lover. Not a particularly difficult fate to accept since she has already decided not to fall in love due to the risks of her ability, but that changes when she realizes her feelings for Jude.
āŗ Her overall interests. While Isla does try to control her emotions, she is quite adventurous, loves exploring, reading and learning. Her interests are particularly focused on the ancient history of Egypt, botany, the ocean and fossils.
āŗ Occupation: Isla is a clerk at Chiswick Solicitors. Her employer, unbeknownst to her when she starts working there, is Jude's solicitor. Isla is independent and doesn't wish to work for her father's company. This is partly because she wants to maintain her distance from them, but also because she wants to make her way in the world as a woman.
āŗ Her family: Isla's family was quite a well-rounded one. Her parents accept her for who she is (even before they learn her ability is a curse.) They are a wealthy, but common family.
Her father -Jacques - is a fine fabrics and textiles merchant of La Lune. He himself has a past, so he tries not to pass judgement on others too quickly. He also ensured that Isla had an equal education to that of her younger brother, Rivera.
Isla's mother - Moira- is quite feisty and does all she can to reassure Isla of their love. She loves giving Jude a hard time when it comes to his feelings for her daughter, and she trusts Jude implicitly with her daughter's well-being.
Rivera - Isla's younger brother by two years. He is set to inherit La Lune, but he feels inadequate compared to his sister. Isla loves him dearly, and is eaten up with guilt that she nearly killed him when they were children. Rivera is overly protective of his sister and extremely jealous of Jude. Even setting fire to one of his warehouses at the docks as a warning to keep away from her.
Jude's relationship with her family: It bothers Jude that her parents are so comfortable with her being near him, and he wonders if they truly care about their daughter's well-being. However, he eventually learns of what Isla's parents have done to keep her protected once her ability manifested. Additionally, Jacques explains to Jude that he finally sees a light in her eyes that they thought she'd lost forever. Hence, they'd rather their daughter be with him and be herself than the shell she's been trying to pass off as her true self. Overall, Jude grumbles about them, but he cares deeply about Isla's family. He sees them as his own family over time.
āŗ Isla & Oswald are quite fond of each other. He often encourages Isla to give Jude a run for his money and to make his life a living hell if he starts to be a pain in the ass. Isla often tries to encourage Jude to visit Oswald and maintain a relationship with him.
āŗ Her relationships with Crown. Isla along with all of Crown, but Alfons, Ellis and Roger are those whom she gets along with most.
